Frequently Asked Questions for Newcomers in Canada

Common legal, consular, and immigration validity inquiries.

Under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regulations, work permits (including PGWP and LMIA) and study permits cannot be issued past the expiration date of the applicant's foreign passport. If your passport expires in 6 months, IRCC will cap your permit validity to 6 months. Renewing your home passport early ensures you can receive your full authorized stay.

Most consulates and service partners (such as BLS for India or VFS for the UK) require proof of lawful Canadian immigration status. If your permit has expired but you submitted an extension before expiry, you maintain legal status under IRCC 'Maintained Status' (formerly implied status). Submit your IRCC Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) alongside your renewal dossier.

In Canada, BLS International is the contracted partner for the High Commission and Consulates of India (with centers in Brampton, Toronto, Surrey, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal). VFS Global handles British and specific European services. Other nations, such as the Philippines, Mexico, France, and China, manage renewals through direct consular appointments or official government mobile apps.

CAUTION: If you were granted refugee / protected person status in Canada, applying for or renewing a passport from your country of origin can be treated by IRCC and the CBSA as 're-availment' of diplomatic protection under Section 108 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). This can initiate cessation proceedings to strip your refugee status and PR. Refugees should apply for a Canadian Refugee Travel Document (1951 Convention) instead.

Photo specifications are determined by your country of citizenship, NOT Canadian domestic standards. For instance, India and the U.S. require 51mm x 51mm (2x2 inches) with white backgrounds, whereas France and the UK strictly forbid white backgrounds (demanding 35mm x 45mm on light grey/blue backgrounds). Always verify the country-specific photo rule before visiting a Canadian photographer.
