Expat Transition Steps

  3. For non-reciprocal licenses, request an official Driving History Extract from your home country licensing authority before arriving in Canada.
  4. Submit your application. Your health card number is issued immediately; the physical card arrives in 4-6 weeks.

Healthcare CardOHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). Registration requires physical presence, proof of residency (e.g. lease), and eligible immigration status (work permit valid for 6+ months). The historical 3-month waiting period has been permanently waived.
Driver's License SwapDriveTest Ontario - Direct G license exchange available for U.S., UK, Germany, Austria, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and South Korea. If your country is non-reciprocal (e.g., India, China), you must pass a written knowledge test and a road test, but you can skip the mandatory 12-month wait times by presenting an official Driving History Abstract (DL Extracted Record) from your home country.
