Expat Transition Steps

Locate your nearest ServiceOntario center for health cards and DriveTest center for licensing.
Gather original copies of your Work/Study Permit, passport, lease agreement, and bank statement.
For non-reciprocal licenses, request an official Driving History Extract from your home country licensing authority before arriving in Canada.
Submit your application. Your health card number is issued immediately; the physical card arrives in 4-6 weeks.

Licensing & Healthcare

Healthcare Card

OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). Registration requires physical presence, proof of residency (e.g. lease), and eligible immigration status (work permit valid for 6+ months). The historical 3-month waiting period has been permanently waived.

Driver's License Swap

DriveTest Ontario - Direct G license exchange available for U.S., UK, Germany, Austria, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and South Korea. If your country is non-reciprocal (e.g., India, China), you must pass a written knowledge test and a road test, but you can skip the mandatory 12-month wait times by presenting an official Driving History Abstract (DL Extracted Record) from your home country.

Does OHIP cover prescription medicines in Ontario?

Generally no for adults. However, OHIP+ provides free coverage for over 4,400 prescription drugs for children and youth aged 24 and under who are not covered by a private group plan.

Can I drive in Ontario with a foreign license temporarily?

Yes, visitors and new residents can drive on a valid foreign driver's license for up to 60 days. After 60 days, you must exchange it for an Ontario driver's license.

Moving Note

Mobility rights under Section 6 of the Canadian Charter allow PRs to move freely between provinces. However, if you received PR via a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), you should establish residency in that nominating province first to demonstrate a "genuine intent to reside" to avoid status challenges.
