Provincial Driver's License Exchange Guide

How to transfer a foreign driver's license to an Ontario G, BC Class 5, or Alberta Class 5 license without repeating road tests.

Driving Legally After Relocating

When moving to Canada, you can drive legally using your foreign driver’s license for a brief grace period (typically **60 to 90 days** depending on the province). After this grace period, you must obtain a license from your province of residence to keep driving.

If your home country has a **License Reciprocity Agreement** with your province, you can perform a direct exchange. If not, you must enter the province's graduated licensing program, though you can receive credits for past driving history.

Reciprocal Agreement Jurisdictions

The following countries have reciprocal exchange agreements with most Canadian provinces. License holders can exchange their foreign license for a full passenger car license (e.g. Ontario G, BC Class 5) by passing a vision test and paying the fee:

United States (all states)
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Croatia
Denmark
France
Germany
Great Britain (UK)
Hungary
Isle of Man
Japan
Kosovo
New Zealand
Northern Ireland
Republic of Ireland
South Korea
Switzerland
Taiwan
Ukraine

πŸ“ Provincial Exchange Procedures

Select your province of destination to see local DMV guidelines:

Ontario Rules (DriveTest)
  • Reciprocal Exchange: Exchange is done at a DriveTest center. You must bring your original license (with official English/French translation if needed), pass a vision test, and pay the $90 fee.
  • Surrendering Original License: You must surrender your foreign physical license (with the exception of Japanese license holders).
  • Non-Reciprocal Countries (e.g. India, Brazil): You must take the written G1 test. If you present an official Letter of Authentication (issued by your home licensing authority) proving 2+ years of experience, you can immediately book your G2 Exit Road Test to get a full G license, bypassing the standard 12-month wait times.

⚠️ Surrender Notice

Under provincial highway safety acts, you can only hold **one** active physical driver's license at any time. When you exchange your license, the agent is legally required to confiscate and destroy your foreign license. Japanese citizens can recover their licenses through their consulate.
