Image Standards: Clear color image, plain light-colored background (cream or light grey), face directly facing camera, neutral expression with mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, no hair across eyes, no shadows or red-eye.
Eyeglasses Rule: Eyeglasses should ideally be removed; tinted lenses and glare/reflections are strictly rejected.
Important Consular Warnings
- Do not use the outdated £94.50 fee; the current international online adult fee is £116.50 (£130.50 for 54-page frequent traveller).
- Do not use £20.86 as the courier fee; current international DHL delivery is £14.32 per shipment (£28.64 for passport + supporting documents).
- Official fees are charged exclusively in pounds sterling (GBP); credit cards will convert at the card issuer's rate.
- VFS Global in Canada handles UK visas only; it does NOT process British passport renewals.
- The British High Commission in Ottawa and Consulates in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary do NOT accept routine passport renewal applications.
- The British High Commission address is 140 Sussex Drive, Ottawa (do not use the old 80 Elgin St address).
- Do not send your passport to a generic UK address; HMPO assigns a specific processing team and address during the online application.
- Dual citizens must provide a full-colour photocopy of EVERY page (including all blank pages) of their Canadian or other foreign passport.
- Do not book international travel until your new passport has arrived and its details have been verified.
- Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are strictly for urgent journeys and do not replace the standard passport renewal process.
