UAE School Admission Age Cut-Offs & Transfer Rules
Current guidance for new admission ages, Dubai transfer certificates, school-leaving records, mid-year transfers, curriculum placement, inclusion and KHDA registration fees.
UAE-wide admission-age rules and Dubai-specific KHDA registration procedures are separated below because they are not the same regulatory process.
2026–27 UAE Admission-Age Policy
The Ministry of Education approved a new admission-age cut-off for the 2026–27 academic year. For schools, kindergartens and early-childhood institutions whose academic year starts in August or September, the official age is calculated as of 31 December of the admission year.
For schools whose academic year begins in April, the 31 March cut-off continues under the existing system.
The updated rule applies to new admissions for 2026–27. Students already enrolled during 2025–26 continue under the rules that applied when they were originally registered. Transfers are handled using the last successfully completed grade and approved equivalency procedures.

Important Transition Rule for Children Already Enrolled
Children already enrolled in 2025–26
The new December 31 cut-off does not retrospectively move a child to another grade. The Ministry states that students already enrolled during 2025–26 continue under the admission rules applicable when they originally registered.
New applicants for 2026–27
New applicants must satisfy the revised age criteria. For August/September schools, the decisive date is December 31; for April-start schools, March 31 remains applicable.
Dubai School Transfer & Leaving-Certificate Process
For Dubai private schools, the transfer process is managed through the school and KHDA registration system. A leaving certificate is the formal document used to facilitate transfer to another educational institution.

Transfer within Dubai
- Current-school leaving / transfer documentation.
- Last successfully completed grade must be evidenced.
- Receiving school completes the relevant KHDA registration process.
Transfer from outside the UAE
- Academic certificate / transfer documentation from the previous school.
- Relevant education-authority and foreign-affairs attestation in the issuing country where required.
- Additional admission documents can be requested by the receiving school.
A generic “four-step attestation” sequence should not be treated as identical for every country and every school document. The precise attestation chain depends on where the document was issued and the applicable authority requirements.
Grade Placement When Changing Curricula
The Ministry’s 2026–27 age-policy announcement specifically states that transfers between schools and curricula are placed according to the last successfully completed grade and academic progression under approved equivalency procedures.

Students of Determination — Admission & Inclusion

Dubai Application & Registration Fees — 2026

Practical Parent Transfer Checklist
1. Confirm the receiving school
Check seat availability, curriculum, grade, admissions test and school-specific requirements.
2. Verify age / placement
For new 2026–27 KG/Grade 1 admissions, apply the correct December 31 or March 31 rule.
3. Obtain academic records
Collect the transfer / leaving certificate and evidence of the last successfully completed grade.
4. Check attestation
For foreign-issued certificates, follow the applicable issuing-country education and foreign-affairs attestation chain.
5. Complete withdrawal
Submit the withdrawal request to the current school and resolve outstanding tuition obligations where required.
6. Complete KHDA registration
The receiving Dubai school submits the student registration request through KHDA with the required documents.
