Scholarship awards are university- and programme-specific. There is no single UAE-wide percentage, GPA, SAT or stipend threshold.
Important distinction: Higher-education funding policies vary by university. Institution-specific awards (such as NYUAD need-based aid or Khalifa University tiers) should be checked directly with the university rather than assuming universal rules.
How Higher-Education Funding Works in the UAE
UAE higher-education funding can come from universities, government or government-linked scholarship schemes, external sponsors, research programmes and private or community organisations. The rules are not identical across institutions.
A scholarship can be merit-based, need-based, research-based, programme-specific or linked to a special category such as athletics or national service. The coverage may apply to tuition only or may also include accommodation, books, health insurance, transportation or a stipend.
The exact award letter and university scholarship policy control the student’s obligations and renewal conditions.

NYU Abu Dhabi — Need-Based Aid Explained
Current policy
- Students of all citizenships may apply for need-based institutional aid.
- The CSS Profile is used to assess demonstrated financial need.
- Custodial and, where applicable, noncustodial parents submit their financial information.
- The aid amount is determined individually from the demonstrated financial need.
- NYUAD publishes the applicable CSS Profile deadlines by application round.

NYUAD’s published 2026–27 estimated cost of attendance includes tuition, health insurance, food, housing and other estimated costs. Individual financial-aid awards are not identical to these headline costs.
NYUAD also states that external scholarships and grants are considered when determining total financial support, and combined awards cannot exceed the annual cost of attendance.

Khalifa University expressly states that international scholarship selection is competitive and that meeting minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee an award. The scholarship is assessed as part of the admission process; there is no separate scholarship application.

A published amount at one university should not be converted into a UAE-wide assistantship salary or stipend rule.

Undergraduate applicants
- Check whether the award is automatic with admission or requires a separate application.
- Review the university’s exact academic, programme and nationality criteria.
- Submit transcripts and any required academic or language evidence.
- Submit financial-need documentation when the award is need-based.
- Read the award letter for renewal, conduct and academic requirements.
Master’s / PhD applicants
