UAE School Admission Age Cutoffs & Transfer Guide
Understand the new 2026–27 age cut-offs, school-transfer documents, Dubai leaving certificates, Abu Dhabi transfer records and admission-fee rules.
Age eligibility, grade placement, transfer documentation and admission fees are separate questions and are therefore evaluated separately below.
2026–27 Admission-Age Framework
The Ministry of Education announced that, beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, schools and kindergartens whose academic calendars begin in August or September use 31 December of the admission year as the age cut-off.
The policy defines the minimum age as 3 for Pre-K/FS1, 4 for KG1/FS2, 5 for KG2/Year 1 and 6 for Grade 1/Year 2.
Schools whose academic year begins in April retain the 31 March cut-off under their existing system.
The policy applies to new students for 2026–27. Students already enrolled continue under the admission rules that applied at the time they were registered.

Transfer Placement Rules
The 2026 MOE policy specifically says placement for students transferring between schools or curricula, or arriving from outside the UAE, is based on the last successfully completed grade and academic progression in line with approved grade-equivalency procedures.

Dubai — KHDA Transfer Documentation
- The student should be registered in the KHDA system.
- Current Dubai school must settle outstanding tuition before applying for the KHDA leaving certificate.
- The school submits the leaving-certificate request through the KHDA portal.
- The current KHDA service fee is AED 120 and completion is immediate.
- The certificate is issued electronically after approval and payment.
Abu Dhabi — ADEK Transfer Documentation
- ADEK requires schools to maintain student registration records in eSIS.
- For transfers into Grade 2/Year 3 or above, including mid-year Grade 1 transfers, the sending school must issue a student-performance report and Transfer Certificate.
- The Transfer Certificate must be attested where applicable to the country from which the student is transferring.
Mid-Year Transfers
Current KHDA registration guidance allows registration during the academic year subject to the applicable process and available places. Abu Dhabi uses ADEK’s eSIS transfer process.

Parent Transfer Checklist
1. Confirm the receiving school
Verify vacancies, curriculum, grade, assessment and the school’s own document requirements.
2. Calculate age correctly
Use the child’s date of birth and the applicable 31 December or 31 March cut-off rather than a simple age slider.
3. Check transfer status
Determine whether the child is a new entrant or a transfer and whether a Transfer Certificate is applicable.
4. Obtain academic records
Collect the last completed grade record, transfer certificate and performance report where required.
5. Check attestation
For foreign-issued academic documents, confirm the attestation chain with the relevant authority and receiving school.
6. Complete the authority process
Dubai uses KHDA processes; Abu Dhabi uses ADEK/eSIS processes for registration and transfers.
