Understand curriculum requirements, programme-specific academic standards, English testing, EmSAT/SAT, school certificate equivalency and university-specific deadlines.
Based on current UAE Ministry of Education, CAA and university admissions information checked for 2026.
There is no single UAE university admission cutoff. UAE universities set their own programme and applicant requirements within the applicable higher-education framework. A national “70% = admission” or “SAT 1100 = admission” rule should not be presented as law.
How UAE university admissions actually work
Higher-education institutions operate within the UAE regulatory and accreditation framework, but individual universities and programmes establish their own admissions criteria. Requirements can vary by curriculum, degree, applicant category and institution.
That distinction is important for engineering, medicine, health sciences, highly selective institutions and international branch campuses, where academic and testing requirements can be materially higher or different from general undergraduate requirements.
Regulatory and admissions roles
Area
Authority / institution
Role
Regulatory framework
Ministry of Education / Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA)
Provides the higher-education regulatory and accreditation framework and programme/institution requirements.
University admissions
Individual university / admissions committee
Sets institution-specific academic, language, testing, document and programme requirements within the applicable framework.
School-certificate equivalency
UAE Ministry of Education
Provides the official Grade 12/general-education certificate equivalency service for qualifying foreign/overseas certificates.
Testing
EmSAT / approved external testing providers / university
The required testing route depends on the university, programme and applicant category.
Check requirements by curriculum
CBSE / ICSE / Indian Boards
These are general admissions patterns, not national minimum scores. The university and programme's current admission page controls the actual requirement.
Category
Typical requirement pattern
General programmes
Universities commonly review Grade 12 results and required Grade 12 subjects. The minimum percentage is institution- and programme-specific.
Engineering / STEM
Engineering and science programmes commonly require Mathematics plus relevant science subjects. Exact percentage and subject grades vary by university.
English proficiency
English proficiency requirements vary by institution. IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, EmSAT or another approved route may be accepted.
Curriculum overview
Curriculum
General admission
Engineering / STEM
Medicine / health
CBSE / ICSE / Indian Boards
Recognised Grade 12 completion and required academic subjects
Mathematics and relevant science subjects; exact minimums are university-specific
Biology/Chemistry and other prerequisites where required; selective programmes can have higher thresholds
British Curriculum
Recognised IGCSE/GCSE plus the required AS/A-Level combination
Usually requires Mathematics plus relevant science subjects at the required grades
Usually has stricter subject and grade requirements set by the individual medical programme
American Curriculum
Recognised high-school diploma and transcript with required subjects
Mathematics and science preparation; SAT/AP can be required or considered depending on institution
Highly selective and institution-specific academic/testing criteria
IB Diploma
Recognised IB Diploma with programme-specific subject prerequisites
Mathematics and relevant science subjects at the required SL/HL level
Higher subject/grade expectations are common, but the exact threshold is institution-specific
UAE National Curriculum
Grade 12 completion in the applicable stream and university requirements
Advanced/Elite stream or specified Mathematics/science results may be required
Selective programmes can impose substantially higher academic thresholds
Important: A curriculum table is only a starting point. A university can require a particular subject, grade, placement test or additional assessment even when the applicant meets the general curriculum requirement.
Standardised testing
IELTS Academic
Current university examples range around 6.0–6.5+
Not a universal UAE minimum. Exact score depends on university/programme.
TOEFL iBT
Current university examples include 79–80+
Different universities can require different scores or alternatives.
EmSAT English
Some UAE institutions use EmSAT or list it as an accepted route
Do not publish 1400+ as a universal undergraduate requirement.
SAT Math
Can be required, preferred or not used depending on institution
A SAT 600–750 or 1100–1350 national rule does not exist.
AP / A-Level / IB results
Often used for subject preparation and competitive assessment
Programme-specific subject requirements matter more than one national score.
Admission tests versus external tests
A university may require its own admission or placement test even when it accepts SAT, IELTS, TOEFL or EmSAT results. Khalifa University, for example, currently requires shortlisted undergraduate applicants to take KU admission tests, while separately listing IELTS/TOEFL and describing SAT Math as a preferable score that strengthens an application.
Therefore, “I have SAT 1350” or “I have IELTS 7.0” does not by itself guarantee admission.

The following are common documents, not a universal UAE checklist. The exact submission list should come from the university's current admissions page.
Official academic transcripts required by the university
Passport copy
Emirates ID / UAE residence information where applicable
English-language or other test results where the university requires them
Certificate equivalency or proof that the equivalency application is in progress where required
Passport photograph where requested
Additional programme-specific documents such as portfolio, interview, statement or recommendation where required
MOE Grade 12 certificate equivalency
The UAE Ministry of Education provides an official equivalency service for qualifying general-education certificates issued outside the UAE. The current service checks the authenticity, issuing institution and compliance with recognised academic standards.
The exact timing and whether equivalency must be completed before admission, before registration or as a condition of enrollment depends on the university and applicant category.
Example: Khalifa University currently requires equivalency for private UAE and international schooling systems, while American University of Sharjah provides a conditional registration route for certain students whose equivalency process is pending.
Current university examples
University / source
Current 2026 example
Khalifa University — Fall 2026
Current undergraduate admission materials specify 80% minimum in Grade 12 Mathematics plus one science subject for American/SABIS/Indian/Pakistani boards, with different stream requirements for UAE national curricula and detailed British/IB rules.
Khalifa University — English
Current undergraduate requirements list IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 and separately describe KU Admission Tests; SAT Math 700 is presented as a preferable score that strengthens an application.
American University of Sharjah
Current admissions information lists IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 and provides a conditional registration route for certain applicants with pending MOE Certificate of Equivalency.
These examples demonstrate why the UAE should not be represented as having one universal SAT, GPA, IELTS, IB or medicine cutoff.
Application process
1
Choose the university and programme
Start with the exact institution and degree. Medicine, engineering, computer science and other selective programmes can have different prerequisites.
2
Identify the curriculum-specific requirements
Check whether the university recognises your CBSE/ICSE, British, American, IB or UAE national curriculum and which subjects/grades it requires.
3
Check language and entrance testing
Confirm whether IELTS, TOEFL, EmSAT, SAT, AP, A-Level results or a university-specific admission test is required.
4
Prepare certificate recognition/equivalency
Check whether the university requires a Ministry of Education equivalency before admission, before registration or only as a condition of final enrollment.
5
Submit before the university deadline
Deadlines differ by university, intake, nationality/residency category and programme. Do not rely on a single UAE-wide deadline.
6
Complete conditional requirements
If an institution issues a conditional offer, complete every outstanding test, equivalency, transcript or document requirement by the deadline stated in the offer.
Application deadlines
UAE universities do not share one national undergraduate application calendar. Fall, Spring, summer and programme-specific deadlines can differ substantially. Always use the exact university's official admissions timeline.
2026 example — Khalifa University: applications for expatriates, international applicants and previous-year graduates opened on 17 November 2025 and the final deadline was 2 March 2026. This is an institutional example, not a UAE-wide deadline.
No. There is no single national percentage, GPA or A-Level/IB/SAT cutoff that applies to every UAE university and every programme. Universities set their own admissions requirements within the applicable higher-education regulatory framework. Requirements can also differ between ordinary undergraduate programmes and selective programmes such as engineering, medicine and health sciences.
No universal rule should be stated that every applicant to every UAE university must submit EmSAT. EmSAT is an official UAE standardized-testing system used for admission and other educational purposes, but individual universities and programmes can specify which tests they require or accept. For example, current Khalifa University undergraduate admissions list IELTS/TOEFL for English and separate KU admission tests, with SAT Math described as a preferred test that can strengthen an application.
There is no single UAE-wide minimum score. Requirements depend on the university and programme. For example, Khalifa University currently lists IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 for its undergraduate admissions, while American University of Sharjah currently lists IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 for admitted bachelor’s applicants. Other universities can set different scores or accept alternative evidence.
Not in exactly the same way for every university and situation. The UAE Ministry of Education provides a Grade 12 equivalency service for qualifying foreign/overseas certificates, and some universities require the equivalency as part of admission or enrollment. Other universities can allow conditional admission while the equivalency process is pending. The applicant should follow the specific university’s current instructions.
There is no universal UAE university application calendar. Each institution publishes its own intake dates, programme deadlines and applicant-category deadlines. For example, Khalifa University’s Fall 2026 undergraduate timeline opened different applicant categories at different times and had a final application deadline of 2 March 2026. Students should therefore check the exact university and intake rather than relying on a national November-to-July schedule.
Some universities permit conditional admission subject to completing specified requirements by a deadline, but this is not a universal UAE entitlement. For example, American University of Sharjah states that applicants with a pending Certificate of Equivalency can be permitted to register conditionally under its process. Other institutions may require the document or test result before issuing an offer or before enrollment.
