📋 How to Register as a Sole Trader
1
Check if you need to register
If your gross self-employment income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, you must register for Self Assessment. Deadline: 5 October following the year of trading.
2
Create a Government Gateway / GOV.UK One Login
Visit GOV.UK and create your Government Gateway account or use the newer GOV.UK One Login. You'll need your National Insurance number and a valid email address.
3
Register for Self Assessment (SA1 or CWF1)
Complete HMRC form CWF1 online to register for Self Assessment as self-employed. HMRC processes it within 10 working days and sends your UTR by post.
4
Keep records of income and expenses
HMRC requires you to keep records for 5 years after the 31 Jan filing deadline. Use HMRC-recognised software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, FreeAgent) for Making Tax Digital (MTD) compliance from April 2026.
5
File your Self Assessment tax return
Online deadline: 31 January each year. Paper deadline: 31 October. Pay any tax owed by 31 January. Payments on Account may be required in July too.
