FBAR (FinCEN 114) & FATCA Reporting Rules
U.S. persons holding foreign bank accounts (e.g. in India, Canada, UK) must meet strict annual reporting thresholds:
- FBAR Threshold (FinCEN Form 114): Mandatory if the aggregate maximum balance of all foreign financial accounts exceeds **$10,000 USD** at any point during the calendar year.
- Automatic FBAR Extension: The FBAR deadline is April 15, but FinCEN grants an automatic extension to **October 15** every year. No Form 4868 is required.
- FATCA Threshold (Form 8938): If residing abroad, you must file Form 8938 with your Form 1040 if your total foreign assets exceed **$200,000 USD** on the last day of the tax year (or **$300,000 USD** at any point during the year) for single filers.
