Benefits Application Checklist

Complete these steps to file for U.S. government benefits:

  • Obtain SSNs for DependentsYour children must hold valid Social Security Numbers by the tax filing deadline to qualify for the Child Tax Credit.
  • File IRS Form 1040File your annual federal income tax return. Claim the Child Tax Credit on Schedule 8812.
  • Direct Deposit Banking SetupProvide routing and account numbers on your Form 1040 to receive refunds directly to your bank account.
  • Proof of Relationship & ResidencyKeep birth certificates and school/medical records on hand to prove your children lived with you in the U.S. for more than half the year.
  • Check Social Security Statement (SSA.gov)Create an account on ssa.gov to track your accumulated retirement credits and verify that your employer is reporting your earnings correctly.
Section 8 Housing

The Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) is administered by local public housing agencies (PHAs).

Eligibility is based on family income (cannot exceed **50% of the median income** for the county or metropolitan area in which you choose to live).

Disability (SSDI vs SSI)

SSDI: Benefits are paid to you and certain family members if you are "insured," meaning you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

SSI: Supplemental Security Income is a need-based program providing cash assistance to elderly or disabled individuals with minimal assets/income.
