Little India is a historic district in central Singapore that developed from the 19th century around Serangoon Road and became an important centre for Singapore's Indian community. Contrary to a common simplified account, Raffles did not designate Serangoon Road itself exclusively for an Indian community in 1822; URA notes that the area developed into the heart of Singapore's Indian community from the mid-1800s. Little India was gazetted as a conservation area on 7 July 1989, with additional buildings along Desker Road, Syed Alwi Road and Jalan Besar conserved in later phases. Today the district combines Hindu temples, mosques, churches, conserved shophouses, traditional businesses, Tekka Market, the Indian Heritage Centre, Mustafa Centre and modern food and retail businesses. The area is also closely associated with Deepavali and Thaipusam.
