Overseas Born Children

Dual Citizenship Rules
Adult Position
Singapore does not generally permit adults to retain foreign citizenship together with Singapore citizenship. Article 134 gives the Government power to deprive a Singapore citizen of citizenship where the statutory conditions concerning acquisition or retention of foreign citizenship are satisfied.
Legal Precision
Article 134 should not be described as a simple sentence saying that 'dual citizenship is banned under Article 134'. Article 134 is specifically a constitutional deprivation provision. Separate constitutional and citizenship-registration provisions establish the broader renunciation and single-nationality framework.
Minor Position
Minors can have foreign citizenship under the other country's law. A person who became a Singapore citizen by registration under Article 124, for example, ceases to be a Singapore citizen at 22 unless the required Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty is taken within 12 months after turning 21.
Practical Planning
The calculator should flag dual-citizenship planning as a future compliance issue rather than treat foreign-passport surrender as an immediate application-stage action.
National Service
General Rule
Under the Enlistment Act framework, male Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents are generally liable for National Service unless exempted.
Specific Applicant Warning
ICA specifically states that male applicants granted Singapore citizenship or PR as foreign students or under their parents' sponsorship are liable for NS.
Registration
Affected males are required to register for NS at 16.5 years old, with enlistment generally from age 18 subject to applicable education, deferment and enlistment rules.
Full Time Service
Eligible full-time National Service is generally 2 years, but individual enlistment timing and obligations can differ and the calculator should not claim that every male new citizen automatically begins exactly two years of service at age 18.
Later Service
After full-time NS, eligible servicemen may have Operationally Ready National Service obligations under the applicable framework.
Renunciation Impact
A citizenship renunciation application may be withheld in specified circumstances where the person is subject to the Enlistment Act and has not discharged the required NS liability, subject to the constitutional conditions.
