1. How Express Entry Invitation Rounds Work
Express Entry manages applications for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Eligible candidates create a profile, enter the pool and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. IRCC then selects candidates through different types of invitation rounds.
2. Current 2026 Category-Based Selection Priorities
IRCC's 2026 Express Entry priorities are different from the earlier category list. The renewed labour-shortage categories are health care and social services, education, STEM and trades, with transport also included. French-language proficiency continues as a separate category. IRCC also created categories focused on physicians, researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience and skilled military recruits with a Canadian Armed Forces job offer.
3. Category-Based Work-Experience Rules in 2026
For the 2026 occupation-based categories addressing long-term labour shortages, IRCC increased the minimum qualifying experience from the earlier six-month rule to at least one year of cumulative work experience in a single eligible occupation acquired during the previous three years. The experience may be in Canada or abroad, depending on the category. The French-language proficiency category uses a language criterion rather than the occupation-based one-year requirement.
4. The Official Draw Tracker: What Each Round Tells You
IRCC publishes an official history of invitation rounds containing the round number, date and time, round type, number of invitations issued, lowest CRS score invited and tie-breaking timestamp. This official record should be used instead of generic claims such as 'general draws usually need 520–545' or 'French draws usually need 420–440'.
5. Understanding CRS Cutoffs Correctly
The CRS cutoff is the score of the lowest-ranked candidate who received an invitation in that specific round. It is not a permanent pass mark. A category round can have a lower cutoff than a general round because only candidates eligible for that category compete in that round, but the actual cutoff depends on the eligible pool and the number of invitations issued.
6. What Happens After an ITA?
An Invitation to Apply is not permanent residence. Once IRCC issues an ITA, the candidate must submit the permanent-residence application within 60 calendar days. The application is assessed using the information and evidence provided and must still meet the requirements of the program and, where applicable, the category.
7. Profile Validity, Tie-Breaking and Re-Entry
An Express Entry profile remains in the pool for up to 12 months if the candidate is not invited. If the profile expires, the candidate must create and submit a new profile to remain in the pool. The tie-breaking rule applies when multiple candidates have the same CRS score at the cutoff: the earlier Express Entry profile submission date and time takes priority.
8. CRS Changes You Must Know in 2026
One major change that affects Express Entry strategy is the removal of CRS points for job offers. As of March 25, 2025, IRCC stopped awarding the former 50-point and 200-point CRS additions for job offers. A valid job offer can still be relevant where it is part of an immigration program's eligibility requirements, but applicants should no longer add those former bonus points to their CRS calculation.
