Labor Shortage Fields for College Grads

If you graduated from a college diploma program (and applied for a study permit on or after Nov 1, 2024), your course CIP must align with one of these five areas:

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

Includes software developers, data scientists, engineers, and IT specialists (matched with specific 6-digit CIP codes).

Healthcare & Medicine

Includes nursing grads, pharmacy assistants, medical lab technicians, and supporting clinical roles.

Skilled Trades & Construction

Includes electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and industrial machine operators.

Agriculture & Agri-food

Includes agricultural technicians, food inspectors, and quality assurance specialists.

Transport Operations

Includes deck officers, aircraft mechanics, and logistics coordinators.

PGWP Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for all applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, you must submit language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, or TCF) showing you meet the minimum CLB requirement. The test must be less than 2 years old when you apply.

Yes, you can work full-time under **Maintained Status** if you: (1) held a valid study permit when you applied, (2) completed your program of study, (3) were authorized to work off-campus during your studies, and (4) applied for your PGWP before your study permit expired.

If your study permit expires, you must either: (1) apply to restore your status as a student and then apply for a PGWP, or (2) leave Canada and apply for your PGWP from outside. You cannot work during this restoration window.
