UAE Speed Limits & Radar Fine Calculator

Calculate the published speeding-fine bracket from the actual posted speed limit, then understand black points, vehicle retention, minimum-speed rules and authority-specific payment practices.

Never use this page as permission to exceed a posted speed limit. Road signs and official traffic controls take priority.

Speed Limits: Why a Generic “Zone Table” Is Unsafe

UAE speed limits are set for particular roads and sections. A generic national table saying that every residential road is 40, every urban road is 60 or every E-road is 120 can mislead drivers. Temporary limits, work zones, lane-specific controls and road-specific signs can change the applicable maximum.

SituationHow to determine the applicable speed
Posted limit 60 km/hThe actual road may have additional restrictions or lower temporary limits. Follow the displayed signs.
Posted limit 80 km/hDo not substitute a generic “city road” limit if the actual sign shows 70, 80, 90 or another value.
Posted limit 100 km/hSome major roads use 100 km/h limits, but the applicable sign on the road controls.
Posted limit 120 km/hA 120 km/h limit is used on some major UAE roads; it is not a universal limit for every highway section.
Posted limit 140 km/h or higherHigher limits exist on designated road sections in some Emirates, but they must be identified from the posted sign rather than assumed from the road name.

Dubai Speed-Radar Tolerance

A commonly cited Dubai practice is a 20 km/h radar tolerance on many roads. However, this should not be presented as a legal right to drive 20 km/h above the posted limit.

  • The legal posted maximum remains the speed shown on the road sign.
  • Enforcement technology and operational settings can differ by road, radar and enforcement operation.
  • A driver should never deliberately exceed the posted limit on the assumption that a radar will ignore the excess.

Abu Dhabi Speed Enforcement

Abu Dhabi Police enforcement uses the posted road limit and current traffic controls. The 2026 page should not promise an unofficial “zero-tolerance buffer” number for every road and enforcement system.

Where a particular road has a minimum speed sign or another specific enforcement rule, that road-specific rule applies. Drivers should check the actual sign and current Abu Dhabi Police / TAMM information.

Minimum-Speed Rules

This does not mean that every UAE highway has a 120 km/h minimum. A minimum speed is road-specific and must actually be established for that road or lane. Do not treat the maximum speed as a minimum speed requirement.

The current 2026 Abu Dhabi Police initiative also allows qualifying fines to be paid by instalment through participating banks without interest.

Impoundment: What the Fine Table Tells You

Serious speeding can create three separate consequences: monetary fine, black points and vehicle retention.

  • More than 50–60 km/h: AED 1,500 + 6 points + 15 days for light vehicles.
  • More than 60–80 km/h: AED 2,000 + 12 points + 30 days for light vehicles.
  • More than 80 km/h: AED 3,000 + 23 points + 60 days for light vehicles.
  • Release process: authority-specific; smart-impoundment and release costs should be checked with Dubai Police, RTA, Abu Dhabi Police or the relevant authority.

Black Points and Serious-Speeding Consequences

Black points are attached to the traffic record in addition to the monetary fine. The serious-speeding brackets in the published schedule carry 6, 12 or 23 points depending on the excess speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The published UAE traffic schedule provides AED 300 for exceeding the maximum speed by no more than 20 km/h; AED 600 for more than 20 to 30 km/h; AED 700 for more than 30 to 40 km/h; AED 1,000 for more than 40 to 50 km/h; AED 1,500 plus 6 black points and 15-day vehicle retention for more than 50 to 60 km/h; AED 2,000 plus 12 black points and 30-day retention for more than 60 to 80 km/h; and AED 3,000 plus 23 black points and 60-day retention for more than 80 km/h, with the published retention provisions applying to light vehicles as specified.

Drivers should not treat a radar tolerance or enforcement setting as a legal permission to exceed the posted speed limit. This page therefore calculates speeding from the posted maximum speed and does not promise a 20 km/h grace margin. Road-specific and enforcement-specific arrangements can change, so drivers should follow the displayed speed limit rather than relying on an assumed radar buffer.

No. Speed limits are set for specific roads and sections and are communicated through posted regulatory signs and applicable traffic controls. A road described generally as a highway, urban road, residential road or expressway may have different posted limits on different sections. The posted sign on the actual road should control over a generic table.

No. The federal traffic schedule provides a AED 400 penalty for driving below a minimum speed limit where a minimum speed has actually been set for that road. It does not create a universal 120 km/h minimum for all UAE highways. A driver should only be subject to a minimum-speed rule where that minimum is posted or otherwise validly established for the particular road.

Abu Dhabi Police’s current 2026 “Pay and Benefit” initiative provides a 35% discount when a qualifying traffic fine is paid within the first 60 days from the date of the violation, and a 25% discount when paid after 60 days and up to one year from the date the fine was issued. Dangerous violations are excluded from the discount initiative.

Serious speeding can trigger vehicle retention in addition to the fine and black points. Under the published federal schedule, exceeding the maximum speed by more than 50 to 60 km/h carries 15-day retention for light vehicles, more than 60 to 80 km/h carries 30 days, and more than 80 km/h carries 60 days. The practical release process, smart-impoundment options and any release fees depend on the issuing authority and the particular violation, so they should not be reduced to one universal UAE daily or maximum amount.
