Biometric e-Passport & Smart Gates Guide

Current guide to UAE electronic passports, Dubai Smart Gates, passenger registration, biometric verification and the different automated-border-control arrangements at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports.

UAE smart-border technology

The UAE uses biometric and automated systems to accelerate passenger processing at its airports. In Dubai, GDRFA operates Smart Gates at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC), while federal and Abu Dhabi authorities operate biometric and smart-travel technologies at Zayed International Airport (AUH).

The exact eligibility and procedure are not identical across every airport. Dubai Smart Gate rules are published by GDRFA Dubai and Dubai Airports, while AUH publishes its own current passenger and biometric guidance. This page therefore separates Dubai and Abu Dhabi instead of presenting one universal UAE Smart Gate rule.

DXB
Dubai International Airport Smart Gates operated within the GDRFA Dubai passport- control system.
DWC
Dubai World Central also provides Smart Gates for eligible registered passengers.
AUH
Zayed International Airport uses biometric technology and Smart Gate facilities for eligible passengers under Abu Dhabi/ICP arrangements.

Pre-issued visa holdersCurrent GDRFA guidance also lists pre-issued visa holders.Registration/system eligibility applies.

This replaces the old "70+ visa-on-arrival countries" claim. Current GDRFA guidance uses passenger categories rather than publishing the page's former 70+ country threshold.

Dubai Smart Gate registration

GDRFA Dubai provides a dedicated Smart Gate registration-inquiry service. Current guidance states that passengers need to be registered to use the gates and allows travellers to check eligibility using information such as passport number, Emirates ID or other passenger identifiers.

A recently travelling passenger may already have been registered when passing through passport control.
The GDRFA registration-inquiry service can be used to check whether the registration was completed successfully.
The current service guidance says registered passengers should be at least 1.2 metres in height.
Some passenger categories are specifically excluded from Smart Gate use.
A passenger who cannot complete Smart Gate verification can return to the immigration counter for assistance.
Registration is not the same thing as guaranteed access on every journey; current system eligibility and passenger circumstances still apply.

Who should not use Dubai Smart Gates?

Current GDRFA Dubai guidance specifically identifies several passenger groups who should not use the Smart Gates.

People of determination.
Guests travelling with large strollers.
Families with children.
Guests under 15 years of age.
Guests under 1.2 metres in height.
Pre-registered residents who have stayed outside the UAE for six months.
Registered passengers whose passport or nationality has changed or whose passport has been renewed, until the registration issue is resolved.

How to use a Dubai Smart Gate

  1. Enter the Smart Gate only when your passenger category and registration make you eligible.
  2. Stand on the marked footstep area and look toward the green light / camera.
  3. Allow the biometric verification process to identify you.
  4. The system may require you to scan a biometric passport where necessary.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions until the gate completes the passport-control transaction.
  6. If the gate cannot process you, return to the staffed immigration counter behind the gate for assistance.

Before approaching the gate

Remove anything covering the face, including masks, glasses and hats, where required for biometric verification.
Keep the passport available even when facial verification is expected to be used.
Keep the boarding pass available in case airport staff request it.
Follow airport staff instructions if your travel status requires manual immigration processing.
Do not assume that a previous successful Smart Gate journey guarantees the same access after changing nationality or renewing a passport.
Passengers who need accessibility assistance or fall into an excluded category should use the staffed immigration process.

First-time visitors and Smart Gates

The earlier page stated that every visitor must use a staffed counter on their first UAE arrival and can only use Smart Gates from their second entry. Current Dubai Airports and GDRFA information is more precise: first-time Smart Gate users are registered at the passport-control touchpoint on arrival. Once registered, an eligible passenger can use Smart Gates on later journeys, subject to the current system and passenger conditions.

UAE electronic passport

The UAE's electronic passport is an official smart travel document. ICP states that the UAE introduced its electronic passport for citizens in 2011 and launched a new generation of Emirati passports in 2021 as part of the country's identity-system upgrade.

Smart electronic chip

ICP states that the electronic passport contains a smart chip containing the holder's personal and biometric information and uses encryption and advanced security measures.

International standards

ICP states that the passport was introduced in accordance with international technical and security standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Anti-forgery purpose

The electronic chip and advanced security features are intended to strengthen document security and reduce the risk of forgery.

Biometric verification

Electronic passport technology supports identity verification systems used in modern border-control processes.

Zayed International Airport (AUH)

Zayed International Airport uses advanced biometric technology at various airport checkpoints, including check-in and boarding. Its current passenger guidance also tells arriving passengers to proceed to immigration and notes that eligible residents and nationals can use Smart Gates for faster processing.

Airport-specific rulesAUH eligibility should be checked against current airport and ICP guidance rather than assuming DXB rules apply identically.

Smart Gates are not the same as airport Fast Track

A Smart Gate is an automated passport-control technology. It should not be confused with a paid airport Fast Track service.

Smart Gate

Automated border-control system available to eligible registered passengers. GDRFA Dubai states that its Smart Gates have no additional fee.

Fast Track

A separate airport priority service. Zayed International Airport currently advertises paid Fast Track access to dedicated security and immigration lanes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central use Smart Gates as automated passport-control systems. Eligible registered passengers can complete the process through biometric verification, normally by looking at the green light above the camera; a biometric passport may be requested where necessary.

Current GDRFA Dubai guidance lists UAE nationals, GCC nationals, UAE residents, visa-on-arrival and Schengen Union guests, and holders of pre-issued visas among Smart Gate users. Registration is required and individual system eligibility can vary.

Do not treat this as a universal second-entry rule. Current Dubai Airports and GDRFA guidance says first-time Smart Gate users are registered at the passport- control touchpoint on arrival. Once registered, eligible passengers can use Smart Gates on later journeys, subject to current eligibility and system checks.

Current GDRFA guidance says that if a passenger cannot pass through the Smart Gate, they can return to the immigration counter behind the gate for assistance. Remove face coverings such as masks, glasses and hats as instructed and keep the passport and boarding pass available.

The UAE electronic passport is a secure travel document containing a smart chip with personal and biometric information. ICP states that the UAE introduced the electronic passport in 2011 and launched a new generation in 2021 using advanced security features and ICAO-aligned standards.

Current GDRFA guidance says Smart Gates should not be used by people of determination, guests with large strollers, families with children, and guests under 15 years of age or under 1.2 metres in height. Those passengers should follow the staffed immigration process.
2026 source noteCheck the airport before travelling

Smart Gate eligibility, passenger registration, airport procedures and available biometric services can change. Dubai rules are published by GDRFA Dubai and Dubai Airports, while Abu Dhabi procedures are published by Zayed International Airport and ICP. Always check the current airport guidance before travelling.
