Subclass 407 Training Visa

Australia Training Visa Subclass 407 2026 | Sponsorship, Nomination & Training

The Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa for eligible people undertaking workplace-based occupational training in Australia to improve skills for their current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise, or to complete a professional development training program. The visa can be granted for up to two years.

Comprehensive Statutory Overview

The Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa for eligible people undertaking workplace-based occupational training in Australia to improve skills for their current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise, or to complete a professional development training program. The visa can be granted for up to two years. The 2026 process has an important sponsorship change: before a standard 407 visa application can be made, the sponsor must generally already be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor and, unless the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, the training nomination must also have been approved. The visa is designed for genuine structured training and is not a substitute for an ordinary employment or skilled-worker visa.

Eligibility

TRAining Purpose
General: The subclass 407 visa is for workplace-based training or professional development that improves the applicant's skills for a current occupation, field of tertiary study or area of expertise.
Not Ordinary Employment: Home Affairs expressly states that subclass 407 is not for ongoing work in Australia. The training purpose must remain genuine throughout the program.
TRAining Types:
Type: Occupational training required for registration
Description: Training required for a person to obtain registration, membership or licensing where the relevant occupation requires practical training before registration.
Type: Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation
Description: Training designed to improve the applicant's skills in an occupation that is eligible under the subclass 407 framework.
Type: Occupational training for capacity building overseas
Description: Training linked to overseas capacity building, including eligible overseas qualifications, government-supported training and specified professional-development arrangements.
Age:Applicants usually must be at least 18 at the time of decision. A person under 18 can only be granted the visa where exceptional circumstances exist.
Health:Applicants and accompanying family members must satisfy the applicable health requirements.
Character:Applicants must satisfy Australia's character requirements and provide police certificates or other evidence when requested.
Financial Capacity:The applicant must be able to financially support themselves in Australia and support accompanying family members.

Sponsorship And Nomination

2026 PRocess
Stage1: The organisation must first be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor, unless the sponsoring organisation is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency.
Stage2: For a non-Commonwealth sponsor, the sponsor must lodge a nomination for the applicant and the proposed training program.
Stage3: Home Affairs must approve the nomination before the applicant can lodge the subclass 407 visa application.
Stage4: The applicant then submits the visa application and satisfies the separate visa criteria.
Commonwealth Government Agency
Sponsorship: A Commonwealth Government agency can sponsor a subclass 407 applicant without the normal nomination requirement.
Nomination: The nomination exemption does not remove the need for the government agency's sponsorship to be approved before the visa application.
Nomination Information:
  • Identity and details of the proposed trainee.
  • Purpose and type of occupational training.
  • Training location and organisation.
  • Details of the structured training program.
  • Information showing why the proposed training is genuine and appropriate.
Changing Sponsor:If a 407 holder changes to another sponsor, the new organisation must be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor and submit a new nomination. The holder generally does not need a new visa merely because the sponsor changes if the approved visa and training framework permit the change, but the new nomination must be approved before training with the new sponsor begins.
Changing TRAining:If the training program changes while the holder remains with the same sponsor, the sponsor generally needs to submit a new nomination. Depending on the extent of the change, a new visa application can also be required.

Documents

Applicant:
  • Valid passport and identity documents.
  • Evidence of functional English, unless an exemption applies.
  • Curriculum vitae or résumé.
  • Relevant academic or vocational qualifications.
  • Current registration, licence or professional credentials where required for the proposed training.
  • Evidence of health and character compliance when requested.
  • Evidence of sufficient financial support.
TRAining Evidence:
  • Approved nomination information.
  • Details of the occupational training program.
  • Training objectives and activities.
  • Information explaining how the proposed training relates to the applicant's current occupation, study area or field of expertise.
  • Professional-development evidence where the application uses the professional-development training category.
PRofessional Development:For professional-development training, Home Affairs requires sponsor evidence confirming that the sponsor is satisfied the applicant is undertaking the specified professional-development program and has relevant managerial or other professional skills and experience. A signed statement from the applicant's current manager describing the current position and duties may also be required.
Unpaid TRAining:Where the training involves an unpaid placement that falls within the Department's specified requirements, the relevant acknowledgement forms for the applicant and sponsor may need to be completed.
TRAnslations:Documents not in English should be translated according to Home Affairs requirements. Additional country-specific identity or verification evidence can be requested.

English Requirement

Level:Functional English
Current Rule:Applicants generally need evidence of functional English to undertake the training program.
Passport Exemptions:
  • United Kingdom passport holders.
  • Canadian passport holders.
  • New Zealand passport holders.
  • United States passport holders.
  • Republic of Ireland passport holders.
Other Evidence:Home Affairs also accepts specified education and approved English-test evidence. The current test framework changed on 7 August 2025, so the exact test and score should be checked on the current Home Affairs functional-English page.
Example Score:For tests taken under the current framework, IELTS Academic or General Training may be accepted with an average band score of at least 4.5, subject to the visa-specific requirements and test-date rules.

Duration And Conditions

Duration:The subclass 407 visa can allow a stay in Australia for up to two years.
TRAvel:The visa generally allows the holder to travel to and from Australia while the visa remains valid.
New407:The visa cannot simply be extended beyond its validity period. A person wanting another subclass 407 visa must satisfy the requirements for a new visa, including continuing sponsorship where required.
TRAining Compliance:The holder must undertake the training or professional-development activity for which the visa was granted and comply with all visa conditions.
Employment Distinction:The visa is not designed to fill an ordinary ongoing job. Work undertaken as part of the genuine approved training arrangement must remain consistent with the approved training purpose.
Family:Eligible family members can be included in a subclass 407 application or subsequently added where the relevant visa rules allow it and the family members satisfy the secondary criteria.
Under18:Home Affairs can refuse the visa if it is not in the best interests of an applicant who is under 18.

Cost And PRocessing

Visa Charge:The visa application charge changes over time and can depend on applicable concessions. Use the official Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator immediately before applying instead of hard-coding an outdated amount.
PRocessing Time:Processing time is variable. Home Affairs directs applicants to its visa processing-time guide, which is indicative only and depends on the application and any further checks required.
Other Costs:
  • Sponsorship and nomination costs payable by the sponsor where applicable.
  • Health examination costs where required.
  • Police certificates and document-translation costs where applicable.
  • Any professional or registration costs associated with the training itself.

Important Rules

No Generic Work Permit:Subclass 407 should not be marketed as a general employment visa. Its purpose is occupational training or professional development.
30 Hour Rule:There is no universal current Home Affairs rule stating that every subclass 407 training program must be exactly 30 hours per week. Do not use the former 30-hour figure as a mandatory blanket requirement.
70 Percent Rule:There is no universal current Home Affairs rule on the main 407 page requiring exactly 70% practical training for every program. Training requirements depend on the specific training type and occupation.
Sponsorship Change2026:From the 2026 sponsorship reforms, standard 407 visa applications require the sponsoring organisation to already be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor and, except for Commonwealth Government agencies, the nomination must already have been approved.
Occupation Eligibility:The relevant training occupation must fit the subclass 407 occupation framework where the selected training type requires an eligible occupation. Home Affairs publishes the applicable occupation instrument.
Visa Alternatives:If the employer's actual purpose is to fill an ongoing skilled position rather than provide genuine structured training, an employer-sponsored visa such as the Skills in Demand subclass 482 or another skilled visa may be more appropriate depending on the facts.

Home Affairs identifies three occupational-training categories: training required for registration; training to improve skills in an eligible occupation; and training for capacity building overseas, which includes specified overseas qualifications, government-supported training and professional-development arrangements.

No. A universal 30-hour-per-week requirement should not be published as a current blanket rule for every 407 program. The approved training program and the requirements for the particular training type determine the appropriate structure.
