Important Things to Verify Before Moving
A relocation checklist is useful for organizing tasks, but many U.S. requirements are state-, immigration-category-, employer-, or institution-specific. A date shown in this checklist is therefore a planning target unless the item identifies an actual legal deadline.
Keep copies of your passport, visa documentation, approval notices where applicable, Form I-94, and other status documents. Form I-797 is a USCIS notice used for different purposes; it is not itself a visa.
Driver licensing, vehicle registration, school vaccination requirements, insurance rules, state taxes, and some address-related procedures vary by state. Do not apply a single national deadline to all of these subjects.
Immigration status and U.S. tax residency are not the same question. The IRS uses rules such as the green card test and substantial presence test, with special exceptions for certain students, teachers, trainees, and other categories. Determine your federal tax status separately from your visa status.
