🪪 Documents Required for DMV License Exchange

Regardless of whether your country has reciprocity, you must establish your legal identity and state residence at the DMV. Bring original copies of:

Document TypeExamples & Details
Legal Status ProofValid Passport with Visa stamp, Form I-94 Arrival Record, and Form I-797 (H-1B) or Form I-20 (F-1).
Social Security CardOriginal SSN Card. If you are on a visa that is ineligible to work (like H-4 without EAD or B1/B2), you must visit an SSA office to obtain an official **SSN Ineligibility Letter** before visiting the DMV.
Proof of State ResidencyTwo separate items: signed rental lease, utility bill (water/gas/electricity), bank statement, or insurance policy showing your U.S. home address.
Foreign License TranslationIf your foreign license is not in English, you must bring a certified translation (often obtained from an embassy or approved translation agency).
Driving on a Foreign License: The Grace Period Trap

Many expats assume they can drive indefinitely on their foreign license or International Driving Permit (IDP). **This is incorrect.** An IDP is merely a translation and does not replace a license.

In most U.S. states, the law requires you to obtain a state driver's license within **10 to 90 days** of establishing "residency" (buying a home, signing a lease, or taking a job in that state). If you continue to drive on a foreign license past this grace period, you can be cited for driving without a valid license, which could void your auto insurance coverage in the event of an accident.
