You normally qualify if you are an employee, have been continuously employed by your employer for at least 2 full years, and are dismissed by reason of redundancy.
For each complete year of service: 0.5 week’s pay under age 22, 1 week’s pay aged 22 to 40, and 1.5 weeks’ pay aged 41 or over. Service is capped at 20 years.
For redundancies on or after 6 April 2026, the statutory week’s-pay cap is £751, giving a maximum statutory redundancy payment of £22,530 (30 capped weeks).
Weekly pay is normally based on the employee’s average weekly pay over the 12 weeks before receiving their redundancy notice.
Statutory redundancy pay is covered by the £30,000 tax exemption. The first £30,000 of qualifying termination payments is tax-free.
The normal employment tribunal time limit is 3 months from the date employment ended, subject to ACAS Early Conciliation extension rules.
