Obtaining ILR (UK Permanent Residence) marks a defining milestone — it gives you the right to live, work, and study in the UK without immigration restrictions. Core ILR Requirements (5-Year Skilled Worker Route)
5 Years Continuous Lawful Residence
You must have spent 5 years in the UK on a qualifying visa (e.g., Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Global Talent, Scale-up, or Innovator Founder). The 5 years are counted from the date your original qualifying visa was granted (not arrival date). Every single day of your stay must be legally authorised — any gap in leave can break continuity.
The 180-Day Rolling Absence Rule
You must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month window during your qualifying 5-year period. This is NOT a calendar year calculation. For any given day in your 5-year period, HMRC looks backward at the preceding 365 days. If total absences in any such window exceed 180 days, your continuous residence is broken and the 5-year clock may restart. Travel days where you are in the UK for any part of the day generally do not count as absences.
Pass the Life in the UK Test
The Life in the UK test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions covering British history, culture, traditions, and the role of government. You have 45 minutes and must score at least 75% (18 correct out of 24) to pass. The test is taken at an approved test centre (from £50). A pass certificate does not expire — once passed, the reference number can be used for both ILR and British Citizenship applications. Exemptions: applicants under 18 or aged 65 and over.
English Language at CEFR B1 (Rising to B2 from March 2027)
You must demonstrate English proficiency. From 26 March 2027, the standard rises from B1 to B2 for most ILR routes. Acceptable evidence: a current Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate (e.g., IELTS Life Skills B1), a UK degree taught in English, or being a national of a majority English-speaking country (e.g., USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, etc.).
Still Meeting Your Visa Conditions at the Time of Application
At the time you apply for ILR, you must still meet the conditions of your qualifying visa — including continuing to work for an approved sponsor at the required salary (for Skilled Workers), or meeting the relevant requirements for your specific visa route. Your sponsor must still be licensed. Applicants cannot apply for ILR while out of the UK.

From ILR to British Citizenship
Once you hold ILR, you can apply for British Citizenship by Naturalisation after 12 months (1 year) if you are a spouse/civil partner of a British citizen, or after 1 year of holding ILR for everyone else — provided you meet the additional requirements below:
