For a standard non-exempt resident under ICP jurisdiction, the absence has exceeded 180 days.

ICP permit after six months abroad
For eligible residents under ICP jurisdiction who have exceeded 180 days outside the UAE, ICP provides a specific permit to allow the resident to remain outside the country for more than six months, subject to approval.
- Apply while outside the UAE.
- Submit the application after 180 days of being outside the UAE.
- Have more than 30 days of residence validity remaining when applying.
- Provide a valid reason for remaining outside the UAE for more than 180 days.
- Pay the applicable fees.
- Enter the UAE within 30 days after approval, including the approval date.
- Understand that this ICP service does not apply to residents of Dubai.

Do not confuse these six different immigration concepts
Outside-UAE rule
Concerns continuous physical absence from the UAE while the residence permit is valid.
Residence expiry
Concerns the date on which the residence permit itself expires.
Cancellation
A separate immigration action ending an existing residence permit.
Post-expiry/cancellation grace period
Time allowed to remain in the UAE after expiry or cancellation. It varies by residence category.
More-than-six-month permit
A specific ICP application for eligible non-exempt residents who have already exceeded 180 days abroad.
Dubai jurisdiction
The ICP federal more-than-six-month permit expressly does not apply to Dubai residents; Dubai immigration is handled through GDRFA Dubai.
Outside-UAE rule vs post-cancellation grace period
These rules are often incorrectly combined. A person can have a residence permit that is still valid while being abroad, and the 180-day outside-UAE rule concerns that absence. Separately, once a residence permit expires or is cancelled, ICP applies a category-dependent grace period for remaining inside the UAE.

Practical checklist if you are outside the UAE
- Identify the emirate and immigration authority responsible for the residence permit.
- Identify the exact residence category: standard, Golden, Green, Blue or another special category.
- Count continuous days outside the UAE from the relevant departure date.
- Check whether the category is exempt from the special six-month permit requirement.
- If under ICP and non-exempt, check whether more than 30 days of residence validity remain.
- If eligible, submit the more-than-six-month permit application from outside the UAE and provide the valid reason.
- Do not assume approval is automatic; ICP reviews the application.
- If the residence has already expired, separately review the applicable renewal, new-entry or grace-period rules.
