How UAE Passport Validity Rules Work
UAE immigration and visa services commonly require visitors and entry-permit holders to have a passport valid for at least 6 months. Current ICP services continue to publish the 6-month requirement for visitor and residence-issuance categories.
Residents, however, can have different re-entry requirements, and airside transit is not equivalent to entering the UAE. A reliable travel page must therefore avoid treating 6 months and 3 months as universal rules for every passenger.

Visitor Entry: The 6-Month Rule

Some nationalities and special visa categories can have additional requirements. Always confirm the current ICP/GDRFA service for the exact visa.
Resident Re-Entry
Current travel guidance summarising UAE rules states that a person holding a UAE residence permit can enter the UAE with a passport valid for at least 3 months after arrival. This should be treated as a resident-entry rule rather than an “Emirates ID exception”.
Keep the residence permit/Emirates ID valid and check the airline's current document requirements before departure.
Transit Through Dubai or Abu Dhabi
Transit is more complicated than a simple “3-month UAE rule”. Current guidance states that a passenger transiting the UAE without passing through immigration may need a passport valid for at least 3 months, but the exact requirement depends on the passenger's travel-document status and itinerary. The destination country's own entry rules also apply.
Airside transit
A traveller remaining inside the international transit area can be treated differently from a passenger who enters the UAE.
Transit visa
If a transit visa is required, the relevant visa and passport conditions must be met.
Final destination
The final destination can impose its own passport-validity requirement, even when the passenger never enters the UAE.
Do not publish “DXB and AUH always require 3 months for transit” as a universal legal rule.
Leaving the UAE: Passport Validity and Exit
The UAE does not have a general rule saying that every person leaving the country must hold a fixed number of months of passport validity solely to exit UAE immigration. The critical issue for departure is whether the travel document is valid and satisfies the requirements of the destination and any transit states.
Airline Boarding and IATA Travel Information
Airlines use travel-document databases such as IATA's Timatic information when checking visa and passport requirements. Emirates states that its online travel-requirements tool is powered by IATA information and warns that requirements can change at short notice.

- The airline's check-in system may flag a document before UAE immigration sees it.
- The correct requirement can depend on passport nationality and residence status.

- Check your passport expiry date before booking travel.
- Check the passport-validity requirement for the exact UAE visa or entry category.
- If you are a UAE resident returning to the country, check the resident 3-month rule and make sure the residence permit is valid.
- For transit, check whether you remain airside or pass immigration and whether a transit visa is required.
- Check the final destination and all transit-country passport rules separately.
- Use the airline/IATA travel-requirements database immediately before departure because requirements can change.
Do I Need Blank Passport Pages?
Do not present “two blank visa pages” as a universal UAE passport-validity rule. Whether blank pages are required can depend on the visa process, the passport type and the countries being visited.
