Singapore Passport & Nationality: Sovereign Statutory Architecture

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Passports Act 2007 & Singapore Constitution

The Singapore passport is widely recognized as the world's most powerful travel document according to the Henley Passport Index, affording its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry into over 190 global jurisdictions. Administered by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) under the Passports Act 2007, Singapore passports issued to citizens aged 16 and above feature a 10-year validity period, cutting-edge biometric facial and iris microchips, and poly-carbonate data pages complying with ICAO standards.

Singapore citizenship represents an uncompromised sovereign covenant governed by Part X of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. Singapore adheres strictly to a single-citizenship policy, legally prohibiting dual nationality for adult citizens aged 21 and above. Naturalized citizens and individuals holding foreign nationality must execute formal renunciations of all foreign allegiances. Passport applications and renewals are fully digitalized via the MyICA portal with a statutory fee of S$70, supplemented by progressive social provisions such as the complete passport fee waiver for Singapore citizen newborns.

Frequently Asked Questions: Singapore Passport & Citizenship

Online Renewal, Lost Passport Penalties, and Dual Nationality Restrictions

No. Singapore strictly does not permit dual citizenship for adults. Under Part X (Articles 134 and 135) of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, any Singapore Citizen who voluntarily acquires foreign nationality, exercises rights of foreign citizenship (such as voting or traveling on a foreign passport), or fails to renounce foreign citizenship by age 22 may be deprived of their Singapore citizenship by the Government. Minors who acquire dual citizenship at birth must formally choose one nationality and take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty (ORAL) before turning 22.

Standard online passport renewal applications submitted via MyICA typically take 1 to 2 weeks for processing during non-peak periods. During peak school holiday and festive seasons, processing times can extend to 4 to 6 weeks. Once approved, citizens receive an email or SMS notification and can book an appointment to collect the passport at the ICA Building or at designated SingPost post offices islandwide.

Singaporeans residing abroad can submit their passport renewal application online via the ICA e-Service (MyICA). During application, you can select the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission (Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate-General) as your collection venue. For lost passports abroad, you must immediately report the loss to local police, obtain a formal police report, notify ICA online, and contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission to obtain an emergency Document of Identity (DOI) or expedited replacement.

Yes. To update your legal name on your Singapore passport, you must first execute a formal Deed Poll through a practicing Singapore lawyer. Next, you must update your National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) with ICA. Once your new NRIC with the updated name is issued, you submit an online passport replacement application on MyICA uploading the certified true copy of your Deed Poll, whereupon your new 10-year biometric passport is printed with your updated legal name.
