Understanding SAVE DMV Status Codes
When the DMV runs your visa details (I-94 or green card) in the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) portal, they may receive three types of responses. SAVE is administered by USCIS under DHS authority (8 CFR Part 103) and used by 1,400+ benefit-granting agencies nationwide:
1. Additional Verification
What it means: SAVE could not complete the initial automated verification and further verification may be required.
Action Required: Follow the instructions from the DMV or other participating agency. Additional verification may require the agency to provide information or immigration-document evidence through SAVE.
2. Case Under Review
What it means: The case is under review by the USCIS Status Verification Office (SVO).
Action Required: Check SAVE Case Check for the current case status and follow up with the DMV or other benefit-granting agency if additional information is requested. Processing times vary.
3. Resubmit Case
What it means: SAVE may require corrected information, additional verification, or another agency action.
Action Required: Ask the DMV or participating agency to review the case result and verify that the information submitted matches your most recently issued immigration documents. Do not assume that a resubmission means the agency made a typographical error.
SAVE vs. I-94 vs. USCIS: Which Agency Handles the Problem?
A SAVE verification problem and an incorrect immigration record are related but not the same thing. SAVE is a verification service used by participating agencies; it does not itself correct an applicant's immigration record and it does not decide whether a person is entitled to a driver's license or other benefit.
| Problem | Typical place to start |
|---|---|
| SAVE says Additional Verification | Contact the DMV/benefit agency handling the application and monitor SAVE Case Check. |
| CBP I-94/admission record is wrong | Use the appropriate CBP Deferred Inspection process and current CBP contact instructions. |
| USCIS-created immigration record/document error | Use the applicable USCIS correction/inquiry process rather than assuming CBP can correct it. |
| DMV license eligibility question | Ask the DMV because SAVE supplies verification information; the DMV makes the benefit/license determination. |
1. I-94 Correction Email Generator
If your SAVE issue appears to involve an incorrect CBP admission/I-94 record, fill in the fields below to generate a draft request email. Confirm first that the discrepancy is actually a CBP admission-record issue; USCIS-created immigration-record errors may require a different process.
2. Generated Request
Copy the draft below only after confirming the correct CBP Deferred Inspection office and its current submission instructions. Do not send sensitive immigration documents to an email address until you have verified that the address belongs to the appropriate official CBP office.
Dear CBP Deferred Inspection Officer, I am writing to respectfully request a correction to my electronic Form I-94 record, as I have encountered a status mismatch in the USCIS SAVE system during my driver's license application. Here are my details for verification: - Full Name (as on Passport): [Full Name] - Date of Birth: [YYYY-MM-DD] - Passport Number: [Passport Number] - Visa / Admission Class: H-1B - Form I-94 Arrival Number: [11-Digit I-94 Number] - Date of Most Recent Entry: [Entry Date] - Port of Entry: [e.g. LAX, JFK, DFW] Description of Error: My class of admission / expiration date is listed incorrectly, causing a verification hold. Please correct my electronic entry record to match my valid passport and approval notices. Attached to this email, where requested by the responsible CBP office, please find copies of: 1. My passport biographical page 2. My visa or applicable immigration document 3. My most recent Form I-94 4. Other supporting evidence of the requested correction, if applicable I understand that the receiving office may have its own document-submission and privacy requirements. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, [Your Name]
