Understanding SAVE DMV Status Codes

When the DMV runs your visa details (I-94 or green card) in the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) portal, they may receive three types of responses. SAVE is administered by USCIS under DHS authority (8 CFR Part 103) and used by 1,400+ benefit-granting agencies nationwide:

1. Additional Verification

What it means: SAVE could not complete the initial automated verification and further verification may be required.
Action Required: Follow the instructions from the DMV or other participating agency. Additional verification may require the agency to provide information or immigration-document evidence through SAVE.

2. Case Under Review

What it means: The case is under review by the USCIS Status Verification Office (SVO).
Action Required: Check SAVE Case Check for the current case status and follow up with the DMV or other benefit-granting agency if additional information is requested. Processing times vary.

3. Resubmit Case

What it means: SAVE may require corrected information, additional verification, or another agency action.
Action Required: Ask the DMV or participating agency to review the case result and verify that the information submitted matches your most recently issued immigration documents. Do not assume that a resubmission means the agency made a typographical error.

SAVE vs. I-94 vs. USCIS: Which Agency Handles the Problem?

A SAVE verification problem and an incorrect immigration record are related but not the same thing. SAVE is a verification service used by participating agencies; it does not itself correct an applicant's immigration record and it does not decide whether a person is entitled to a driver's license or other benefit.

ProblemTypical place to start
SAVE says Additional VerificationContact the DMV/benefit agency handling the application and monitor SAVE Case Check.
CBP I-94/admission record is wrongUse the appropriate CBP Deferred Inspection process and current CBP contact instructions.
USCIS-created immigration record/document errorUse the applicable USCIS correction/inquiry process rather than assuming CBP can correct it.
DMV license eligibility questionAsk the DMV because SAVE supplies verification information; the DMV makes the benefit/license determination.

1. I-94 Correction Email Generator

If your SAVE issue appears to involve an incorrect CBP admission/I-94 record, fill in the fields below to generate a draft request email. Confirm first that the discrepancy is actually a CBP admission-record issue; USCIS-created immigration-record errors may require a different process.

2. Generated Request

Copy the draft below only after confirming the correct CBP Deferred Inspection office and its current submission instructions. Do not send sensitive immigration documents to an email address until you have verified that the address belongs to the appropriate official CBP office.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) is a DHS/USCIS verification service used by participating federal, state and local agencies to verify immigration-status information when determining eligibility for benefits, licenses or other covered services. SAVE provides status information; the DMV or other benefit-granting agency makes the final eligibility decision.

SAVE uses Additional Verification when the initial automated verification cannot resolve the case and further research is required. 'Case Under Review' means the case is being reviewed by the Status Verification Office (SVO); it does not by itself mean that you are ineligible for the benefit or license. Processing times vary by case and verification step.

CBP Deferred Inspection sites assist with certain errors or issues involving CBP admission records, including eligible Form I-94 or admission-data corrections. They are not a universal solution for every immigration-status discrepancy. If the underlying error was created by USCIS rather than CBP, the appropriate USCIS process may apply. Always verify the current CBP Deferred Inspection location and contact instructions before sending documents.

There is no universal SAVE rule requiring every newly arrived nonimmigrant to wait 10 business days before applying. SAVE initial verification can occur within seconds, while additional verification can require more time. The correct application timing depends on the requirements of the DMV, Social Security Administration or other agency, so applicants should follow that agency's instructions rather than treating 10 business days as a guaranteed synchronization period.

The documents and identifiers used by a DMV depend on the transaction and the SAVE verification step. SAVE can use identifiers such as an A-Number, SEVIS ID, unexpired foreign passport number or I-94 number, together with the applicant's name and date of birth. In additional verification, the agency may be asked to provide or upload immigration-document evidence. There is no universal rule that every DMV must upload exactly the same document package.

Yes. A benefit or license applicant can use the official SAVE Case Check service to view the status of a SAVE verification request submitted by a participating agency. You need the verification case information provided by the agency and must follow the Case Check site's current instructions. SAVE Case Check reports verification status; it does not make the final DMV or benefit-eligibility decision.
