The UK Government does not use local embassies or consulates in the U.S. for passport processing. Everything is done online through the official GOV.UK portal. When you take your photo, ensure it has a plain, light grey or cream background (not pure white) and no shadows. The portal has an automated validator that checks your photo file instantly. After completing the online payment, you will receive a mailing address (usually Durham, Liverpool, or Belfast) and a unique barcode slip. You must mail your current physical passport to that address in the UK. Your new passport and old cancelled passport will be returned separately via secure international DHL courier.

Always make full-color digital scans of your current passport data pages and valid U.S. visa stamps before mailing your physical documents anywhere. Ensure that all checks, cashier's checks, or money orders are made out to the exact spelling of the consular office or authorized vendor (e.g., 'VFS Services USA Inc.'). Minor typos on check lines will result in the immediate return of your entire application package.
