Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Fees depend on the Nigerian mission and service. The Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC currently publishes $142.00 USD for a 5-year passport and $242.00 USD for a 10-year passport, and states that a $50 administrative charge is payable by all applicants with a debit card. NIS Headquarters' 2026 diaspora schedule separately lists $150 for 32 pages/5 years and $230 for 64 pages/10 years, so applicants should confirm the fee with their actual U.S. mission.

Yes. NIS integrates NIN verification into the passport-renewal process. Applicants enter their NIN and date of birth, and the system compares passport information with the NIMC identity record. A mismatch can delay or prevent normal processing until the identity record is resolved.

The application can be started online, but ordinary standard passport renewal still requires the applicant to appear personally for biometric and image capture. Nigeria also has a separate Contactless Biometric service for eligible Nigerians in the diaspora through NIS MOBILE; that is a distinct service with its own process.

The Washington Embassy currently says passport collection is about two months after biometric capture, although the passport often arrives before the two-month period ends. The NIS Contactless Biometric diaspora service separately lists 21 days after successful enrolment when there is no local objection.

For ordinary standard passport renewal, yes. NIS requires applicants to appear at the selected processing centre or Nigerian mission for photograph and biometric capture. The separate NIS MOBILE Contactless Biometric service is an alternative diaspora process with different rules.

A lost passport is handled separately from ordinary renewal and requires additional security and identity documentation. Washington currently requires a police report, the online application, two passport photographs and the lost passport number when available. It publishes a $350 lost-passport penalty payable by money order or cashier's check.
