Mexican Passport Renewal in USA (MiConsulado)

Official U.S.-based application procedures, required forms, and submission instructions.

Consular Authority Info

Official Processing Authority:Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) / Mexican Consulates

Mexican passport renewals inside the U.S. are processed entirely in person. Mexico operates one of the largest consular networks in the U.S., with over 50 consulates. You must schedule an appointment through the official 'MiConsulado' booking system (online at `citas.sre.gob.mx` or by calling their toll-free number). Walk-ins are generally not accepted. During your appointment, consular staff will capture your biometric data (photo, fingerprints, iris scan). In most consulates, your new passport is printed on-site and handed to you before you leave the building, making it a same-day service. If you live far from a permanent consulate, watch for visits from the 'Consulado Móvil' (Mobile Consulate) which travels to rural areas on weekends.

📋 Mandatory Document Checklist

You must prepare and include the following original documents and copies in your application package. Missing documents will lead to immediate rejection:

Confirmed appointment booked via the MiConsulado portal or call center
Expired Mexican passport (original + photocopy of data page)
Certified copy of Mexican Birth Certificate (Acta de Nacimiento) if old passport is lost or was issued before 1995
Official photo ID (such as a Matricula Consular, Mexican voter card INE, or U.S. driver's license)
Payment in cash or debit/credit card at the consular window
🛡️ Safe Filing Guidelines

Always make full-color digital scans of your current passport data pages and valid U.S. visa stamps before mailing your physical documents anywhere. Consulates and courier services occasionally lose packages, and having digital backups of your identification numbers will greatly speed up the process of issuing emergency replacement documents.

Ensure that all checks, cashier's checks, or money orders are made out to the exact spelling of the consular office or authorized vendor (e.g., 'VFS Services USA Inc.'). Minor typos on check lines will result in the immediate return of your entire application package.
