From July 1, 2026, Washington lists $62.00 USD for a standard 10-year adult passport when applying on paper and $60.00 USD when applying online. For applicants under 18, the 5-year passport costs $32.00 USD by paper application or $30.00 USD online.

Yes. Eligible overseas residents can apply online through ORR Net, and since August 25, 2026, qualifying holders of the overseas-transferee My Number Card can also use MyNaPortal. The exact application category and supporting documents determine whether the online route is available.

Not necessarily. A straightforward switch application with no change to the information in the family register generally does not require a Koseki Tohon. A Koseki Tohon or qualifying electronic Koseki certificate can be required for a first/new passport, an expired passport, certain name or domicile changes, or other cases requiring verification of family-register information.

Washington currently indicates approximately 3 to 4 weeks under normal conditions. Other Japanese missions can have different operational timelines, and busy periods can take longer. Applicants should allow additional time before international travel.

Yes. Online application does not make passport collection fully remote. MOFA states that the newly issued passport must be received in person at the designated overseas diplomatic mission. A passport that is not collected within six months becomes invalid.

You must report the loss, destruction or theft and apply for a replacement under the applicable procedure. A passport that has been formally reported lost or stolen is invalid and cannot be used even if it is later found. Additional identity and nationality documentation can be required.
