Note on Terminology: For an Indian passport issued to an existing Indian citizen, the official term is generally "Re-Issue of Passport" rather than a simple "renewal." A new passport booklet is issued and the passport number changes. Re-issue can be required because the passport is expiring, has expired, has exhausted pages, has damaged pages, or requires changes to personal particulars.
The Government of India's Passport Seva foreign-mission workflow is accessed through the GPSP 2.0 portal linked by VFS instructions.

The fee depends on applicant age, booklet size, service type and circumstances such as lost or damaged passports. Online card payments can also attract the applicable payment convenience charge. Courier/shipping services are additional where selected. The current VFS information allows online payment and also provides instructions for Cashier's Check, Banker's Check or Money Order where applicable. - Do not send applications directly to the Indian Embassy or Consulates — all routine applications must go through VFS Global.
- A passport expired for more than 3 years requires fresh police verification (PVR) in India, which adds substantial processing time.
- Tatkal is not available for lost/damaged passports, major name changes, or changes to date/place of birth.
- Current Indian passports cannot normally be used for international travel once a re-issue application has been registered.
