German passport renewals in the U.S. require in-person attendance at a German Consulate General (New York, Boston, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Washington D.C.) or a designated Honorary Consul equipped with a biometric station. A critical requirement for German citizens who married or changed their name in the U.S. is the 'Name Declaration' (Namenserklärung). German law does not automatically recognize U.S. name changes. If required, a name declaration must be processed before or simultaneously with the passport application, which requires bringing certified marriage certificates and adds processing time. Payment must be made in USD at the consulate's daily exchange rate.

You must prepare and include the following original documents and copies in your application package. Missing documents will lead to immediate rejection:

Completed and signed passport application form

Current German passport or National ID Card

Original German Birth Certificate (Geburtsurkunde) or Consular Birth Registration

Proof of U.S. residence status (Green Card, Visa, or U.S. Passport if dual citizen)

Proof of deregistration in Germany (Abmeldebescheinigung) if your last passport listed a German address

Two identical biometric passport photos (35mm x 45mm, light grey background)

Always make full-color digital scans of your current passport data pages and valid U.S. visa stamps before mailing your physical documents anywhere. Consulates and courier services occasionally lose packages, and having digital backups of your identification numbers will greatly speed up the process of issuing emergency replacement documents.

Ensure that all checks, cashier's checks, or money orders are made out to the exact spelling of the consular office or authorized vendor (e.g., 'VFS Services USA Inc.'). Minor typos on check lines will result in the immediate return of your entire application package.
