Australian Passport Renewal in USA (Embassy Guide)
Official U.S.-based application procedures, required forms, and submission instructions.
Consular Authority Info
For Australian adults whose current passport was issued when they were 16 or older and is valid or expired for less than 3 years, you can renew by mail. You must complete the application online, print the checklist form, sign and date it in black ink, and mail it along with your physical passport and photos to the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C. (or designated consulates in New York or San Francisco). If you do not qualify for mail-in renewal (e.g., first adult passport, or child passport), you must book an appointment and apply in person at the Embassy or consulate. Australia has extremely strict photo rules: glasses are prohibited even if you wear them daily, and the background must be a specific uniform plain light-grey color.
📋 Mandatory Document Checklist
You must prepare and include the following original documents and copies in your application package. Missing documents will lead to immediate rejection:
🛡️ Safe Filing Guidelines
Always make full-color digital scans of your current passport data pages and valid U.S. visa stamps before mailing your physical documents anywhere. Consulates and courier services occasionally lose packages, and having digital backups of your identification numbers will greatly speed up the process of issuing emergency replacement documents.
Ensure that all checks, cashier's checks, or money orders are made out to the exact spelling of the consular office or authorized vendor (e.g., 'VFS Services USA Inc.'). Minor typos on check lines will result in the immediate return of your entire application package.
