There is no fixed savings amount set for the BN(O) route. If you are applying from outside the UK or have lived in the UK for less than 12 months, you must show that you and your family can adequately maintain and accommodate yourselves for at least 6 months without access to public funds. The assessment takes account of available income and funds after accommodation costs and uses the applicable Income Support level as the maintenance benchmark.
Usually no. If you are applying for permission to stay and have been living in the UK with permission for 12 months or more on the application date, you normally meet the BN(O) financial requirement automatically. There is a specific exception for people who previously received 12 months of Leave Outside the Rules following an unsuccessful BN(O) application.
From 8 April 2026, the Home Office application fee is £206 for 30 months and £285 for 5 years for the main applicant and dependants. In addition, most BN(O) applicants pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. The current IHS rates used for this route are £1,035 per year for adults and £776 per year for children under 18.
Yes. The BN(O) route permits work, including self-employment and voluntary work, and permits study subject to any applicable ATAS requirement. Employment as a professional sportsperson, including as a sports coach, is not permitted. BN(O) holders are generally subject to a no-public-funds condition.
The BN(O) route can lead to settlement after 5 continuous years of qualifying residence if all settlement requirements are met. Settlement is not automatic. British citizenship is a separate nationality application with additional requirements, so holding ILR for 12 months does not by itself guarantee citizenship.
Eligible family members can apply under the BN(O) route, including a dependent partner and qualifying children. Other family members can qualify in specified circumstances, including certain BN(O) Adult Children and adult dependent relatives. Each applicant must satisfy the applicable relationship, residence, suitability and financial requirements.
