The Global Talent route can generally be granted for up to 5 years at a time.

How the Global Talent Route Works

Global Talent is designed for recognised leaders and potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. Most applicants need an endorsement from the appropriate Home Office-approved body. Applicants who hold a specifically listed prestigious prize can bypass endorsement and apply directly for the visa.

Unlike sponsored work routes, Global Talent does not require a job offer, Certificate of Sponsorship or minimum salary. A successful holder can generally work for an employer, be self-employed or establish a business within the conditions of the route.

The Global Talent visa is a UK immigration route for people who are recognised as leaders or potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. It does not require a sponsored job or a minimum salary. Most applicants need an endorsement, but applicants who hold a qualifying prestigious prize can apply directly for the visa without endorsement.

No. The Global Talent route does not require a sponsored job, Certificate of Sponsorship or a minimum salary. Holders can work for an employer, be self-employed, freelance or establish a business, subject to the conditions of the route.

The qualifying period can be 3 or 5 years. A 3-year period applies to applicants endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or UKRI, to Arts Council England or Tech Nation endorsements under the Exceptional Talent criteria, and to people who obtained the visa using a qualifying prestigious prize. Arts Council England and Tech Nation Exceptional Promise applicants normally need 5 years.

The current government application fee is £766. Where an endorsement is required, £561 is paid for the endorsement and £205 for the visa application. Where an eligible prestigious prize removes the endorsement stage, the £766 visa fee is paid at the visa stage. The Immigration Health Surcharge is generally £1,035 per year for each applicant, so the total cost depends on the permission period and whether dependants are applying.

Yes, but only if the award is specifically listed by the Home Office as an eligible prestigious prize. A general statement that an applicant has won a Nobel Prize, Oscar, Turing Award or other major international award is not enough unless the specific prize appears on the current official qualifying list. The named winner can bypass endorsement and apply directly for the Global Talent visa.

The appropriate endorsing body depends on the field. Current Home Office guidance covers Tech Nation for digital technology; the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy and UKRI for relevant science, engineering, humanities, social science and medical disciplines; and Arts Council England or its associated judging bodies for arts and culture disciplines. The July 2026 guidance also includes a Design Industry pathway judged by the Design Business Association on behalf of Arts Council England.

Important

The Global Talent route is evidence-based. A calculator can estimate fees and identify the correct legal pathway, but it cannot decide whether an applicant's portfolio, publications, leadership record, recommendation letters or other evidence satisfies an endorsing body.
