For minors under 18, the father, mother or legal guardian must sign Section 5 of the application form; a legal guardian must provide documentary proof of guardianship where applicable.
For lost or stolen passports, a police report is required.
For applications involving documents issued outside Zimbabwe that change identity information, the foreign documents may need to be authenticated/legalised as required before they can be relied upon for the passport process.

Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Confirm the passport category and reason for replacement

Determine whether you are applying for an ordinary renewal, replacing an expired passport, replacing a lost or stolen passport, correcting personal information, changing a surname, or applying for a temporary travel document. Expired passports are replaced by a new application rather than extended.

Step 2
Prepare the original Zimbabwean identity documents

Collect your long-form birth certificate, National ID if aged 16 or above, current or expired passport and any marriage, divorce, citizenship or other documents relevant to your identity. The Embassy requires at least one original Zimbabwean identity document to begin the application process in London.

Step 3
Book or confirm the Embassy appointment

Contact the Zimbabwe Embassy London to arrange the passport application/document-vetting process. The Embassy's published passport page directs applicants to use the Embassy for the initial external-passport application and document processing.

Step 4
Complete the official P1 passport application

Use the passport application form issued through the Embassy. The Zimbabwe Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that downloaded P1 forms are not accepted. The Embassy verifies and stamps the completed application before it is sent onward for passport processing.

Step 5
Complete the London document-checking stage

Present the original documents, copies and passport photographs to the Embassy. The Embassy verifies/authenticates the required documents and collects the applicable £65 administration fee. Keep the original Embassy receipt because it forms part of the package sent to Zimbabwe.

Step 6
Prepare the application package for Zimbabwe

The UK Embassy states that the applicant is responsible for sending the completed application to Zimbabwe for processing. If the applicant is not travelling to Zimbabwe, a relative or nominated person in Zimbabwe can submit the application at a passport office on the applicant's behalf.

Step 7
Pay the Zimbabwe passport-processing fee

The current London Embassy instruction lists US$170 for ordinary processing or US$270 for urgent processing of up to 48 hours. This fee is paid in Zimbabwe at the passport-processing stage and is separate from the £65 Embassy administration fee.

Step 8
Submit the application at the Zimbabwe Passport Office

The London Embassy lists Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, Gwanda, Masvingo, Murewa, Mazowe, Marondera, Chipinge, Mwenezi, Beitbridge, Hwange, Guruve, Chitungwiza and Lupane among the passport offices where applications can be processed.

Step 9
Track the processing through the applicant or nominee

The passport is processed and issued in Zimbabwe rather than by the London Embassy. The Embassy's current page states that ordinary processing can take up to 21 working days and urgent processing up to 48 hours. The central Registrar-General information currently publishes a different normal-service target, so applicants should use the London Embassy's UK-specific estimate when planning the complete process and allow additional time for transmission.

Step 10
Cancel the previous passport

A valid old passport must be cancelled before the newly issued passport is collected. The applicant can bring the old passport to the London Embassy or send it to the Embassy with a self-addressed prepaid envelope and a cover note requesting cancellation.

Step 11
Provide the cancelled-passport evidence to the nominee

Where a nominee in Zimbabwe is collecting the new passport, the London Embassy states that photocopies of the cancelled passport page should be transmitted to the nominee so the new passport can be collected, unless the original old passport was already sent to Zimbabwe with the application.

Step 12
Receive the new passport in the UK

Because the passport is processed and issued in Zimbabwe, the UK applicant should allow additional time for the document to move from Zimbabwe to the UK after production. The Embassy does not publish a universal six-to-ten-week end-to-end guarantee, so the total time will depend on application processing, nominee handling and international transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for Zimbabwe nationals in the UK

The current Zimbabwe Embassy London passport page separates the costs. The Embassy charges a £65 administration fee in London, while the passport-processing fee is paid in Zimbabwe: US$170 for ordinary processing or US$270 for urgent processing of up to 48 hours. These are separate charges, so the total cost is not simply £135–£200 as a single UK fee.

Not under the current London Embassy procedure. The Embassy verifies the application and documents in London, but it states that the passport itself is processed and issued in Zimbabwe. The applicant can send the complete package to Zimbabwe or authorise a relative/nominee in Zimbabwe to submit and collect it.

For applicants aged 16 and above, the Embassy requires the original Zimbabwe National Registration Card together with a copy. A Zimbabwe driver's licence is not a substitute. The Embassy also states that National IDs are processed and issued in Zimbabwe, so applicants who never had an ID or lost one may need to travel to Zimbabwe to obtain it.

A UK visa, BRP or eVisa is not the core Zimbabwean passport eligibility requirement. Zimbabwean citizenship and identity documents are the key requirements. However, the London Embassy's complete package includes a copy of the visa/proof-of-residence page for a UK permanent resident, so UK residence evidence can be required as supporting documentation.

The London Embassy currently says ordinary passport processing in Zimbabwe can take up to 21 working days and urgent processing up to 48 hours. This is only the Zimbabwe processing stage. London-to-Zimbabwe transmission, nominee submission/collection and return of the passport to the UK add further time, so the total end-to-end period is longer and is not guaranteed.

The Zimbabwe Embassy London issues a Temporary Travel Document for qualifying urgent travel to Zimbabwe. The current London TTD page lists £80 and requires identity/birth/ID documentation, a pending passport application and a confirmed itinerary for direct travel to Zimbabwe. The TTD is one-way and is not a replacement for a normal passport or a document guaranteeing re-entry to the UK.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • Zimbabwe citizenship and Zimbabwe identity documents are the core passport requirements. A UK Skilled Worker visa, Health and Care Worker visa, BRP or eVisa is not a universal eligibility requirement for passport renewal.
  • The London Embassy's passport instructions do, however, require a copy of the relevant UK visa/proof-of-residence page in the application package for a UK permanent resident.
  • A UK eVisa/Share Code does not replace the Zimbabwean long birth certificate, National ID or citizenship documents required for the passport application.
