Completed and signed Form DS-82 for an eligible adult renewal.
Most recent U.S. passport book and/or passport card being renewed. The previous passport must be submitted with the DS-82 application.
The previous passport must be undamaged other than normal wear and tear, must have been issued when the applicant was age 16 or older, and must have been issued within the last 15 years.
One recent colour passport photograph measuring exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The photo should have a white or off-white background, a centered full-face view, and a head size between 25 mm and 35 mm.
The photograph should be printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper and must not be a photocopy or digitally altered image.
Proof of legal name change if the current passport was issued in a previous name, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.
Pay.gov payment confirmation for an overseas adult DS-82 renewal when using the UK mail-in process.
A self-addressed prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery return envelope for the London mail-in procedure, using the weight/return-mail instructions currently specified by the Embassy.
Your UK return address, including an 'In Care Of' name where applicable if the passport will be returned to an address where you are temporarily staying.
A photocopy of any supporting legal name-change document where the applicable post requests it.
For a minor under 16, do not use DS-82. The child must apply in person using DS-11 with citizenship evidence, parental relationship evidence, parent/guardian identification and the required consent documentation.
For a 16- or 17-year-old applying for a first adult passport, use DS-11 rather than treating the first passport as a renewal. At least one parent or legal guardian must be aware of the application.
For a lost or stolen passport, do not submit DS-82. Report the passport lost/stolen and apply for a replacement using DS-11 and the applicable supporting documentation.
For a damaged or mutilated passport that no longer qualifies for DS-82 renewal, use DS-11 and provide the damaged passport plus an explanation/evidence as required.
For emergency travel, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate before mailing a routine renewal because an emergency passport or in-person solution may be necessary.

Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Determine which passport form you need

Most straightforward adult renewals use DS-82. You must use DS-11 instead if the previous passport was issued when you were under 16, was issued more than 15 years ago, has been lost or stolen, is substantially damaged/mutilated, or otherwise fails the DS-82 requirements.

Step 2
Check DS-82 eligibility

For mail renewal, your most recent passport must be submitted, must never have been reported lost or stolen, must have been issued within the last 15 years, must have been issued when you were at least 16 and normally have 10-year validity, must be undamaged except normal wear, and must be in your current name or accompanied by acceptable name-change evidence.

Step 3
Choose the correct UK U.S. mission

Residents in England and Wales use the London passport-service instructions. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate U.S. consular posts and post-specific passport instructions through Edinburgh and Belfast. Do not automatically send a Scottish or Northern Irish application to London's process without checking the competent post's current instructions.

Step 4
Complete Form DS-82

Complete the current DS-82 using the U.S. Department of State form-filler or the official PDF. Print the form single-sided and sign it as instructed. Review the passport number, name, date of birth, social security number, current address and contact details before mailing.

Step 5
Prepare the U.S. passport photograph

Provide one recent colour photo exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). Your head must measure approximately 25–35 mm from chin to top of head, and the face should be centered against a white or off-white background. Do not use a standard UK 35 x 45 mm passport photo.

Step 6
Pay the renewal fee through the UK Pay.gov process

Eligible adult DS-82 applicants in the UK are directed to the overseas U.S. Adult Passport Renewal Fee payment service on Pay.gov. The current adult passport-book fee is $130. Save and print the payment confirmation because it is part of the mail-in application package.

Step 7
Assemble the mail-in package

Place the signed DS-82, current passport, passport photograph, Pay.gov confirmation, legal name-change evidence if applicable and any other required documents into the mailing package. Follow the current London/consular mailing instructions and include the required prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery return envelope.

Step 8
Send the application by tracked Royal Mail

Use Royal Mail Special Delivery or the exact tracked postal service specified by the competent U.S. mission. Keep the posting receipt and tracking number. Overseas passport applications should not be mailed to the domestic U.S. National Passport Processing Center addresses.

Step 9
Wait for U.S. passport processing

Current U.S. Department of State processing times are approximately 4–6 weeks for routine service and 2–3 weeks for expedited service where available. These processing times do not include the time required for the application to reach the processing location or the time required for the completed passport to return to the UK.

Step 10
Track the application

Use the official U.S. passport application-status system after the application has been entered into the State Department system. The Embassy/Consulate can also send email status messages during overseas processing when the local procedure provides for them.

Step 11
Receive the new passport and old documents

For the London mail-in process, the new passport and supporting documents are returned through the designated return-mail procedure. They may arrive in separate mailings. Keep the old passport after it has been cancelled if you need the visa or travel-history record, but do not use it for international travel once it has been cancelled.

Step 12
Verify the new passport before travel

Check the spelling of your name, date/place of birth, passport number, issue date and expiration date immediately after receipt. If the passport contains an error, contact the issuing U.S. mission or Department of State before travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for United States nationals in the UK

No. The ordinary overseas UK process for an eligible adult is DS-82 by mail, with the applicable overseas fee paid through the U.S. government's Pay.gov service. The domestic U.S. online renewal program should not be confused with the overseas UK procedure. Scotland and Northern Ireland residents should follow their own consular post's current instructions.

An eligible adult renewing a passport book with DS-82 pays $130. An adult passport card renewal is $30, and a book plus card is $160. A child under 16 cannot use DS-82 and must apply using DS-11; the current State Department fee schedule lists $100 plus the $35 acceptance fee, totaling $135.

Yes, an expired passport can still be eligible for DS-82. The important eligibility conditions are that the passport was issued when you were at least 16, it was issued within the last 15 years, you submit it with the application, it has not been reported lost or stolen, it is not substantially damaged, and it is in your current name or accompanied by acceptable name-change evidence.

No, not as a standard U.S. passport-renewal requirement. U.S. citizenship and the DS-82 or DS-11 eligibility criteria are what matter. UK immigration documentation can be requested in an individual case, but a UK eVisa or Share Code is not a substitute for your U.S. passport and citizenship documents.

Current U.S. Department of State processing is about 4–6 weeks for routine service and 2–3 weeks for expedited service where available. These times apply to processing after the application reaches the relevant passport agency or centre and do not include the time needed for the application to reach the processing location or the completed passport to return to the UK.

No. Children under 16 cannot renew a passport using DS-82. They must apply in person with DS-11. The child generally must appear with both parents or legal guardians, unless the required documentation shows that one parent's or guardian's consent is not required.
UKVI eVisa & Status Check

A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • A UK visa, BRP, eVisa or settled status is not a universal requirement for renewing a U.S. passport. U.S. citizenship and the passport-eligibility requirements are the core requirements.
  • The U.S. mission can request evidence of UK residence or other documents in particular cases, especially where there are identity, citizenship, address or nationality issues.
  • A UK eVisa/Share Code proves UK immigration status; it does not prove U.S. citizenship and cannot replace the required U.S. passport/citizenship documentation.
