Step-by-Step Application Workflow
Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection
Check your Portuguese identity document first
The ordinary Portuguese electronic passport application requires a valid Cartão de Cidadão or Bilhete de Identidade. If the Portuguese identity document has expired, renew it before applying for the passport because the passport service cannot simply substitute another identity document.
Check whether your passport needs ordinary renewal or another replacement route
You can replace a passport because it has expired, is approaching expiry, contains outdated personal information, has exhausted visa pages, is damaged, destroyed, lost, stolen or otherwise unusable. A second passport and a temporary passport have separate rules.
Identify the competent UK Portuguese consulate
Portugal has two Consulates-General in the UK for passport services: London and Manchester. Your place of residence determines which consular district handles the application. Do not simply choose the office with the shortest appointment queue.
Book the appointment
Use the official Portuguese consular appointment system. A prior appointment is recommended and in practice is required for the passport service at the UK consulates. Appointment availability can change, so applicants should check the official portal regularly rather than relying on unofficial appointment websites.
Prepare your Cartão de Cidadão and previous passport
Bring the valid Cartão de Cidadão/Bilhete de Identidade and the previous passport. In a normal replacement case, the old passport should be surrendered for cancellation. If it cannot be surrendered because it was lost, stolen or destroyed, the alternative evidence required for that situation must be provided.
Attend the consulate personally
The Portuguese government states that the passport must be obtained by the applicant personally and that the request is made at the counter. Identity verification and the required biometric data are collected during the application.
Complete biometric enrolment
The passport application requires the applicant's photograph and biometric information. The biometric procedure is performed by the competent service point and is part of the issuance process, so an ordinary applicant should not assume that a separately printed passport photograph will replace the biometric capture.
Pay the applicable consular fee
The official tariff depends on the requested urgency, whether the passport is ordinary or frequent-traveller, and whether it will be collected at the consulate or delivered to a foreign address. A normal consular-post collection passport is €75; normal foreign-address delivery is €105.
Choose collection or delivery
The official Portuguese service allows passport collection at the place where the request was made or delivery to an indicated address where the delivery option is available. In the UK, applicants should follow the individual consulate's current delivery instructions rather than assuming every service is automatically sent by post.
Track the expected production period
The current official Portuguese passport service lists a normal production time of about 5 working days, with a longer practical interval when delivery to a foreign consular post is involved. Express and urgent services are faster but depend on the requested service, the time of submission and the competent processing route.
Collect the new passport
When the passport is ready, follow the instructions from the relevant Portuguese consulate. The old passport is cancelled when replaced and, where the rules permit, can normally be returned to the holder after cancellation.
Keep your Portuguese identity details current
The Cartão de Cidadão and passport contain personal information that should remain consistent. If your name, birth information, address or other civil-status information has changed, resolve the underlying Portuguese records before expecting a routine passport renewal to proceed without additional documentation.

UKVI eVisa & Status Check
A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.
- Portuguese citizenship is the core passport eligibility requirement. A UK visa, EUSS status or UK immigration permission is not a substitute for the Portuguese Cartão de Cidadão/Bilhete de Identidade.
- Portuguese citizens living in the UK should keep their consular registration and contact information current with the relevant Portuguese consular office.
- The UK immigration status should not be described as a universal passport-renewal requirement. It can be useful as supporting evidence of UK residence where the consular office needs to verify the applicant's address or jurisdiction.
