Consular Authority & Service Provider

Official diplomatic jurisdiction and outsourced centre operators in the UK

Diplomatic Mission / Consular Section:Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in London / Dutch Ministry of Foreign AffairsResponsible for passport issuance, nationality verification, and consular approvals for residents in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Outsourced Application Partner:Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs / VFS GlobalOperates submission counters, biometric data capture, document intake, and secure return courier services.
Primary Renewal Window:There is no universal rule requiring a Dutch passport to be renewed exactly 1 year before expiry. A new passport should be applied for before the current document expires. This is particularly important for Dutch dual nationals living outside the EU because Dutch nationality can be lost if the 13-year nationality-preservation period expires without a new passport, ID card or qualifying Dutch nationality certificate.

Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Create Your Personal NetherlandsWorldwide Checklist

Start at the official NetherlandsWorldwide page for applying or renewing a Dutch passport in the UK. The checklist is personalised to the applicant's nationality, residence, previous documents and circumstances. Print the completed checklist.

Step 2
Prepare the Online Application Form

Complete the Ministry of Foreign Affairs passport/ID-card application form online using a computer or tablet. The official site states that the form does not work on a smartphone. Print and sign the completed form.

Step 3
Collect Every Original Document

Bring every document shown on the personal checklist. The Dutch government states that even someone who has applied for a Dutch passport before must still bring the documents required by the current checklist because they are used to verify Dutch nationality and eligibility.

Step 4
Check Legalisation and Translation Requirements

Foreign birth certificates, marriage certificates and other civil-status documents may need legalisation and translation. Do not assume UK-issued documents are automatically accepted in every circumstance; follow the individual checklist.

Step 5
Prepare the Dutch Passport Photo

Use a colour Dutch-compliant passport photo measuring 35 x 45 mm. The photo must be no more than 6 months old, unaltered, sharp and suitable for biometric identification. Follow the Dutch photo matrix rather than generic UK passport-photo rules.

Step 6
Choose Where to Apply

In the UK, applications can currently be submitted at the Dutch Embassy in London or through VFS Global in London, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Temporary Embassy visits are also announced periodically, including Norwich and Exeter in late 2026.

Step 7
Book the Appointment

Book online with the selected Embassy or VFS centre. The NetherlandsWorldwide UK page warns that appointments can be limited and recommends checking again if no slot is immediately available because cancellations can create new availability.

Step 8
Attend Personally

Passport applications must be submitted in person. This applies to applicants under 18 as well. Bring the signed application, printed personal checklist, all originals and any parental-consent documentation required.

Step 9
Submit Identity and Biometric Information

The application centre verifies identity and processes the passport application. The exact biometric steps and exemptions depend on the applicant's age and circumstances, so applicants should follow the live instructions of the Embassy or VFS centre.

Step 10
Pay the Dutch Government Fee and VFS Charges

Pay the applicable Dutch passport fee. VFS applicants also pay the VFS service fee and any optional services selected. Payment methods vary by location, so check the relevant VFS instructions before attending.

Step 11
Decide How to Receive the New Passport

You can normally collect the new passport or request postal/courier delivery. At the London Embassy, passport delivery is by registered Royal Mail Special Delivery and postage is paid by the applicant. At VFS, passport courier delivery is available for an additional charge.

Step 12
Understand the Old Passport Rules

If collecting the new passport in person, you generally do not surrender the old passport at the application appointment; you hand it in when collecting the new document. If the new passport is to be sent by post, the old passport must be dealt with according to the Embassy/VFS instructions before the new passport is dispatched.

Step 13
Track the Application

VFS applicants can use the VFS tracking system with their application reference. NetherlandsWorldwide does not promise a fixed processing period; applicants are asked to contact the authorities only if they have not received an email after 8 weeks.

Step 14
Collect or Receive the Passport

You will receive an email when the new passport is ready. The document must be collected or sent within 3 months, otherwise it will be destroyed according to the official UK instructions.

Step 15
Check the Passport for Errors

Immediately check details such as your name and place of birth. If there is an error, contact the application location with photos/scans of the incorrect information and explain what the correct information should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for Netherlands nationals in the UK

The current 2026 Netherlands UK fee is €169.15 for an adult passport and €147.40 for a minor passport. At an approximate 25 September 2026 EUR/GBP market rate, these are around £145.60 and £126.85. VFS adds £15.14 per application, while optional London prime-time, SMS and passport-courier services cost extra.

Yes. The current UK system has VFS Global passport/ID-card centres in London, Birmingham and Edinburgh. The Dutch Embassy in London also accepts applications directly. In addition, temporary Embassy visits are announced periodically, including Norwich on 28-29 September 2026 and Exeter on 2-3 November 2026.

You must provide proof of legal residence in the United Kingdom as part of the general overseas checklist, but the exact document depends on your personalised checklist. It is therefore too broad to say that every applicant must provide an EUSS share code or ILR. Follow the current NetherlandsWorldwide checklist for your specific circumstances.

The Dutch government does not publish a guaranteed fixed processing period for every overseas application. It currently warns that applications can take longer during busy periods and asks applicants to contact the authorities only if they have not received an email after 8 weeks. The original 3-5 week promise should therefore not be used as a guaranteed UK processing time.

Voluntarily acquiring another nationality normally causes automatic loss of Dutch nationality, but Dutch law has exceptions, including specific circumstances involving birth/residence in the new country, five years of residence there during childhood, or acquiring the nationality of a spouse or registered partner. Separately, Dutch dual nationals living outside the EU can lose nationality after the applicable 13-year period if they do not renew a Dutch passport or ID card or obtain a qualifying nationality certificate. UK-specific timing starts on 1 January 2021 for people already living in the UK at Brexit, or from the date they moved to the UK if they moved later.

The route depends on whether you still have a copy of the missing passport or ID card. The official UK NetherlandsWorldwide page says that if the document is lost or stolen and you do not have a copy, you can only apply at the Dutch Embassy in London. VFS can handle certain lost/stolen cases when the applicant has a copy of the missing document.
UKVI eVisa & Status Check

A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • Proof of legal residence in the United Kingdom is part of the general overseas passport/ID-card document checklist.
  • The exact accepted UK residence document depends on the applicant's personal checklist.
  • Possible evidence can include a valid UK visa or residence permission; a UK national applying with dual Dutch/UK nationality can use the qualifying UK identity document where applicable.
