Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Step 1
Check AIRE and civil-status records

Before booking a passport appointment, verify through Fast It that your UK address is current and that your AIRE registration belongs to the correct consular district. Also check that your birth and other relevant civil-status records have been registered with the competent Italian Comune where required.

Step 2
Select the correct Italian consular office

Use the office responsible for your UK place of residence. London, Manchester and Edinburgh have separate consular districts and their passport procedures can differ. Edinburgh also works with honorary consulates in Belfast, Aberdeen and Glasgow for biometric collection in appropriate cases.

Step 3
Book the passport appointment

For adult applications, use the official Prenot@Mi system and make sure the correct Italian consular office is selected. London also provides a passport-only call centre. Manchester releases passport appointments through Prenot@Mi every weekday at 18:00 under its current 2026 schedule.

Step 4
Prepare the documents and attend personally

Bring the required passport form, photograph(s), previous passport or accepted identity document and any documents requested for loss, theft, civil-status or other special circumstances. Applicants must normally appear personally so the consulate can verify identity and collect biometric data.

Step 5
Pay the current consular fee

Pay the fee applicable to the consular office and date of application. London updates its GBP passport fee quarterly. Through September 30, 2026 the published London amount is £100.70; from October 1, 2026 the published amount becomes £99.60.

Step 6
Complete biometric enrolment

The passport is a biometric document containing the applicant's photograph and, where required, fingerprints. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection. The relevant consulate will explain the applicable biometric procedure.

Step 7
Receive or collect the new passport

The completion method differs by office and applicant category. London states that an adult passport is normally issued at the appointment when there are no legal or administrative obstacles. Manchester currently warns that issuance can take up to 25 weeks, while postal delivery is used for certain categories. Applicants should not book travel on the assumption of a universal same-day or four-to-six-week service.
