Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Determine the correct German consular jurisdiction

Since February 1, 2025, the German Consulate General in Edinburgh is responsible exclusively for Scotland. The German Embassy London covers England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Channel Islands, Gibraltar and Falkland Islands, while Honorary Consuls accept passport applications within their own local districts.

Step 2
Check whether you qualify for the London online passport pilot

The German Embassy London currently operates a pilot online application service for adults aged 18 or over who live in the Embassy's London jurisdiction and are applying for a biometric passport. Edinburgh and Honorary Consul applicants continue to use the normal application procedure. Even with the online pilot, personal attendance for biometric data is still required.

Step 3
Check your German identity and citizenship records

Review your current German passport/Personalausweis, birth record, marital-name information and citizenship documents. A passport application can be delayed if names, citizenship status or civil-status records do not match.

Step 4
Check whether an Abmeldebescheinigung is required

You do not automatically need a German deregistration certificate. It is required when the last German passport or Personalausweis still shows a German residential address. Applicants who already have a document showing their UK residence normally do not need an Abmeldebescheinigung merely because they live abroad.

Step 5
Complete the application

For the normal route, download the official German passport application form and complete it carefully. Adults in the London online pilot can instead submit the application through the Foreign Office Auslandsportal, although original documents may still have to be presented during the biometric appointment.

Step 6
Book an appointment

A separate appointment is required for each applicant. London and Edinburgh appointments are booked through the German missions' appointment systems. Honorary Consuls require appointments directly with the relevant Honorary Consul and only accept applications from residents of their own consular district.

Step 7
Prepare original documents and copies

Bring the originals and the required copy of each document. The London mission explicitly states that incomplete applications cannot be processed and the applicant may have to book a new appointment. Additional documents can be required depending on the applicant's circumstances.

Step 8
Attend personally for identity and fingerprints

Passport applications must be made in person. The applicant is identified and fingerprints are recorded. The biometric photograph must comply with the German passport specification and be no older than three months.

Step 9
Pay the passport fee

The UK German missions publish the statutory fee in euros together with the current sterling equivalent. The main German missions accept physical Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards. Contactless and wallet payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are not accepted. Honorary Consuls publish separate instructions and currently require the passport fees to be paid by postal order.

Step 10
Passport production in Germany

The biometric passport is produced through the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The UK missions do not print the passport themselves. Standard processing is currently about 5–6 weeks in London and 6–8 weeks in Edinburgh, while Express service is about 3–4 weeks.

Step 11
Postal delivery to the UK

The German missions generally send completed passports and identity documents by post after production. London requires an addressed and prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm Large Letter envelope up to 500g for the standard postal-return procedure.

Step 12
Handle the previous passport

If your old passport is already expired, it can normally be invalidated and returned. If it is still valid, you can choose to have it cancelled immediately, leave it at the mission until the new passport is ready, or retain it temporarily for travel and then send it back for cancellation. The mission may add up to five working days for the final return process if the old document is submitted later.

Step 13
Check the new passport

When the new passport arrives, verify the surname, given names, date/place of birth, photograph, passport number, issue date and expiry date. Contact the issuing mission promptly if any information is incorrect.

Step 14
Update your UKVI account before travel

German citizens who have a UKVI digital immigration record should make sure the newly issued German passport is associated with their current UKVI account before travelling. The German Embassy specifically advises German residents in the UK to check that the currently valid identity document is recorded in their UKVI account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for Germany nationals in the UK

The current UK German-mission fee is €106 (£90.90) for a passport for applicants aged 24 or over and €73.50 (£63.10) for applicants under 24. Express processing adds €32 (£27.50), and a 48-page passport adds €22 (£18.90).

Not always. The German Embassy requires the Abmeldebescheinigung only when the last German passport or Personalausweis still shows a German residential address. If your German document already reflects your UK residence, the normal checklist does not require a separate German deregistration certificate simply because you live abroad.

Proof of your UK immigration/residence status is part of the current German passport checklist in the UK, so you should bring the appropriate evidence from UKVI. However, the UK status itself does not create German passport eligibility; you must still be a German citizen and satisfy the German passport requirements.

Only in a limited pilot. The German Embassy London currently permits adults aged 18 or over living in its jurisdiction to start a biometric passport application through the Foreign Office online portal. You still have to attend the biometric appointment in person, and original documents may still be requested. Edinburgh and Honorary Consul applications continue under their normal procedures.

Current published processing is about 5–6 weeks for a standard passport in London and 6–8 weeks in Edinburgh. Express applications take about 3–4 weeks at either main mission. Applications through an Honorary Consul generally add around one week because of postal transmission.

Yes, where the relevant Honorary Consul accepts passport applications and you live in that Honorary Consul's district. Current German mission guidance lists passport application services through Honorary Consuls in Aberdeen, Barrow upon Humber, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, Londonderry/Derry, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Plymouth and Southampton. Appointments are made directly with the Honorary Consul.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • Current proof of UK immigration/residence status is part of the published German passport checklist for applicants in the UK. The mission may accept the relevant UKVI digital status evidence or other valid UK immigration documentation.
  • A UK Council Tax bill, utility bill or bank statement can be used as proof of current address according to the published German Embassy checklist.
  • A German citizen who is also a British citizen can hold British nationality, but German nationality rules apply separately. Anyone who voluntarily acquired British citizenship after January 1, 2000 should check whether a German retention permit (Beibehaltungsgenehmigung) was required for their specific historical case.
