Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Determine the correct French consular office

France has two general consulates in the UK for passport services: London and Edinburgh. The London Consulate is responsible for its UK consular district and the Edinburgh Consulate handles Scotland. Use the office responsible for your residence rather than choosing purely on appointment availability.

Step 2
Check your passport situation

Identify whether the passport is still valid, recently expired, expired for more than five years, lost, stolen, damaged, or has exhausted visa pages. The documents requested can change significantly depending on this status.

Step 3
Check your French identity and civil-status records

Make sure your French surname, given names, date/place of birth and civil-status information are consistent across your passport, national identity card and French civil records. Resolve important data changes before the passport appointment where possible.

Step 4
Complete an ANTS pre-application if appropriate

A French passport pre-application can be completed through ANTS before the consular appointment. It saves time when the application is lodged. Keep the pre-application number and/or QR code. It should not be confused with the experimental fully remote renewal service, which currently does not cover the UK.

Step 5
Prepare the photograph and documents

Bring the original documents required for your situation and one recent compliant 35 x 45 mm photograph. Do not assume the UK 35 x 45 mm passport-photo standard is a substitute for French requirements; use a photo meeting the French specification.

Step 6
Purchase or prepare the passport fee

For applicants abroad who supply the photograph, the current French passport fee is €96 for adults, €52 for ages 15–17 and €27 for children under 15. The consulate can also accept payment directly by methods specified for the post.

Step 7
Book the consular appointment

Contact or use the appointment system of the competent French consulate. Service availability and appointment procedures can change, so applicants should use the current London or Edinburgh consular instructions rather than third-party appointment websites.

Step 8
Attend the consulate personally

Presence is normally mandatory because the passport application involves identity verification and biometric data collection. A parent or legal representative accompanies a minor according to the applicable parental-authority rules.

Step 9
Complete biometric enrolment

The passport is a biometric document. Fingerprints are collected from applicants who are not exempt by age or circumstance. In particular, children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection under the French passport rules, but they still have to attend the application with the required responsible adult.

Step 10
Submit the application and supporting documents

The consular officer verifies the application, identity, photograph and supporting documents. If the passport has been expired for more than five years or nationality/civil status requires additional verification, additional documents can be requested.

Step 11
Choose collection or postal delivery

In the UK, French citizens may request postal delivery where the conditions are met. The applicant must be registered in the French Register of French Nationals Established Abroad for the UK, have an email address and be able to complete the online receipt confirmation. If postal delivery is not requested or not available, the passport is collected personally at the competent consulate or another authorised collection point.

Step 12
Track passport production

The passport is not manufactured at the consulate. Production time depends on the location and period of application. Applicants can track the application through the official ANTS passport-tracking service and may receive an SMS or email when the passport is ready or dispatched.

Step 13
Receive the passport by post or collect it

For postal delivery, the applicant receives an email notification with the relevant secret code and must confirm receipt through the official tele-service after the passport arrives. The previous passport must be returned by secure mail of the same type when postal delivery is used.

Step 14
Retain the cancelled passport where appropriate

The old passport is normally returned or cancelled according to the collection method. If it contains a still-valid visa, the applicant can generally keep it for the visa's validity period even after the passport has been cancelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for France nationals in the UK

When the applicant supplies the required photograph, the French passport fee abroad is €96 for an adult, €52 for a minor aged 15–17 and €27 for a minor under 15. The exact GBP amount and accepted payment method are determined by the competent French consulate.

No, not as a universal passport-renewal requirement. French nationality and the required French identity/civil-status documents are the core requirements. A UK residence document may be requested as proof of address or in an individual case, but an EUSS share code should not be described as mandatory for every French passport applicant.

Yes. There is no universal rule requiring you to wait until the passport has only 12 months remaining. A valid passport can be renewed, and expired passports can also be renewed under the applicable documentary rules. Applicants should still apply early enough to allow for consular processing and manufacturing time.

No. The experimental fully remote renewal procedure currently applies only to certain adults in Australia, Canada, Spain and Portugal and has additional eligibility conditions. The UK is not included. A UK applicant normally has to complete the consular application in person.

Yes, the UK is included among the countries where postal delivery can be requested, but specific conditions apply. You must be registered in the French Register of French Nationals Established Abroad for the UK, have an email address, be able to use the online receipt process and provide the delivery envelope/service required by the consulate. Otherwise, you collect the passport personally.

There is no universal three-to-five-week guarantee. Service-Public states that manufacturing times vary according to location and time of year because the passport is not produced at the consulate. Applicants can track production through ANTS and receive a notification when the passport becomes available. Allow additional time for postal delivery if that option is selected.
UKVI eVisa & Status Check

A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • A UK visa, BRP, eVisa, settled status or pre-settled status is not a universal requirement for French passport renewal.
  • French passport eligibility is based on French nationality and the applicable identity/civil-status documents. UK immigration status is a separate matter.
  • Proof of UK address/residence can be required for the passport application, and Service-Public specifies a residence document that is less than one year old.
