Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Check the correct Chinese consular jurisdiction

Chinese citizens living in the UK must submit passport applications through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General responsible for their place of residence. The current UK jurisdiction division assigns most UK territory and overseas territories to the Embassy, Greater Manchester and several northern English counties to Manchester, Scotland to Edinburgh, and Northern Ireland to Belfast.

Step 2
Check whether you qualify for passport renewal

The current UK passport-renewal rule covers passports with less than 12 months remaining, passports with fewer than 2 blank visa pages, and passports that have already expired. A passport with more than 12 months remaining can also be renewed when a legitimate reason exists.

Step 3
Download and register in the 中国领事 App

Install the official 中国领事 App and complete the required account/real-name verification. Select the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General responsible for your UK residence, then choose the ordinary passport service.

Step 4
Complete the passport application online

Enter your personal information exactly as it appears in your current passport and identity records. Complete the Nationality Status Declaration and sign electronically. For applicants under 10, the parent or legal guardian follows the minor-signature procedure displayed in the App.

Step 5
Upload the photo and supporting documents

Upload the recent digital passport photo, current passport information page and any annotation pages. Children under 16 must also upload the parent's/legal guardian's identity documents and proof of the guardianship relationship. Each image should match the original document.

Step 6
Complete facial verification

The 中国领事 App may perform facial-recognition identity verification. If facial verification fails, the current London Embassy procedure allows the applicant to skip that stage and complete identity verification when appearing at the consular office with valid identity documents.

Step 7
Pay the £14 passport fee

The current UK Chinese consular fee for an ordinary passport issuance, renewal or replacement is £14. London's current online-plus-offline system allows payment through the 中国领事 App using the payment methods displayed by the App, including UnionPay QuickPass, WeChat Pay, Alipay and bank-card payment.

Step 8
Wait for the Embassy or Consulate review

After submission, monitor the order under My Orders or Message Centre. The consular office can ask the applicant to upload corrected or additional documents. Applicants should not send original passports by post before the office instructs them to proceed to the physical stage.

Step 9
Attend the physical verification stage

When the application status reaches the required physical-review stage, attend the relevant mission with the original current passport and original supporting documents. For the London Embassy's current process, applicants go to the Consular Section at 31 Portland Place for original-document verification, photograph and fingerprint collection.

Step 10
Complete biometric capture

The physical stage includes identity verification and required biometric information such as photograph and fingerprints. The electronic application therefore does not mean that the entire passport process is completed remotely.

Step 11
Wait for passport production

The current London Embassy guidance states that ordinary passport processing usually takes about 10 working days from the time the originals are physically submitted. Manchester's published ordinary-passport guidance also states about 10 working days, with up to 20 working days where additional verification is required. Edinburgh publishes about 10 working days from physical submission, subject to identity verification.

Step 12
Track the application in the App

Follow the order status in the 中国领事 App and the messages sent by the relevant mission. The system can show review, supplement-document, production and completed-document stages.

Step 13
Collect the new passport according to the mission's procedure

The collection process differs by UK mission. London's current system uses physical collection at the Consular Section after the App shows that the document is ready and does not accept postal application packages under its current online-plus-offline procedure. Manchester and Edinburgh have separately published postal-return procedures after the application reaches the document-production stage, so applicants must follow the instructions of the mission they selected.

Step 14
Check the new passport and retain the cancelled passport

Check the new passport's name, date/place of birth, passport number, issue date and expiry date immediately. Where the old passport is retained after cancellation, keep it for historical visa and identity records. A passport that has been reported lost cannot be used again even if later found.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions on consular processing, appointments, and fees for China nationals in the UK

No. The App handles the online application, document upload, identity verification, payment and progress tracking, but the ordinary London process is online plus physical attendance. After the application reaches the required review stage, the applicant must attend the Consular Section at 31 Portland Place with the original passport and supporting documents for identity verification and biometric collection. Procedures at Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast can differ at the physical stage.

The current ordinary Chinese passport fee published by the UK Chinese diplomatic and consular missions is £14 per passport. Ordinary passport annotation is free. The fee is the same standard amount for issuance, renewal and replacement under the published UK fee tables.

The current UK Embassy rule allows renewal when the passport has less than 12 months remaining, when fewer than two blank visa pages remain, or after the passport has expired. A passport with more than 12 months remaining can also be renewed where there is a legitimate reason for early replacement.

Not as a universal standard passport document. The core process is based on Chinese nationality and the consular jurisdiction where the applicant resides. However, special cases can require evidence of UK residence or immigration status. The current London supplementary declaration specifically contains a separate process for applicants who have no lawful UK residence status.

The current UK Embassy and Edinburgh guidance generally state about 10 working days from physical submission of the original documents. Manchester also publishes about 10 working days, with cases involving additional verification potentially taking up to about 20 working days. Appointment availability, document-correction requests and nationality verification can add more time.

This is not an ordinary passport-renewal situation. China does not recognise Chinese citizens as holding dual nationality, and the Nationality Law provides that a Chinese citizen who has settled abroad and voluntarily acquired foreign nationality automatically loses Chinese nationality. The applicant should therefore resolve the nationality issue with the Chinese diplomatic/consular authorities rather than submitting a normal passport-renewal application.
UKVI eVisa & Status Check

A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • The standard Chinese passport-renewal process does not require a UK visa, BRP, eVisa or student-status document as a universal requirement.
  • The application is based on the applicant being a Chinese citizen and using the Chinese mission responsible for the applicant's residence in the UK.
  • In special cases, the consular office can ask for evidence of lawful residence in the UK or other documents relevant to nationality and identity verification.
