Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Sequential procedure from online government filing to passport collection

Step 1
Check Whether You Qualify for Simplified Renewal

Confirm that the last passport was an adult passport issued when you were at least 16, issued within the last 15 years, valid for 5 or 10 years and has the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier you want on the new passport.

Step 2
Choose PPTC 482 or a General Application

Use PPTC 482 for eligible adult simplified renewal. If any simplified-renewal condition is not met, use the applicable general adult passport application instead. Do not use a child passport form for an adult.

Step 3
Complete the Form on a Computer

Canada recommends completing the PDF on a computer using Adobe Reader. Do not rely on completing the form on a phone or tablet because the form may not work correctly. Read the instructions at the end of the form and sign each required page.

Step 4
Prepare the Canadian Passport Photos

Obtain two identical Canadian-compliant passport photos from a commercial photographer. Give the photographer Canada's 50 x 70 mm specifications and make sure the studio information and photo date appear on the back of one photo.

Step 5
Choose Two References

For the renewal process, provide two references who are 18 or older, have known you personally for at least 2 years and agree to be contacted. They do not need to be Canadian citizens or residents of the UK. Certain family members and people living at the same address who are related to you cannot be used.

Step 6
Pay the Passport Fee Online

Use the official Government of Canada online payment service and pay the applicable CAD fee. Print the payment receipt. The London High Commission currently states that passport applications should be paid online and that payment is not accepted in person.

Step 7
Prepare the Application Package

Include the completed form, required photos, references, payment receipt and any applicable supporting forms. If your current passport contains a valid visa that you still need, state on the application that you want the original passport returned so the visa is not damaged when the old passport is cancelled.

Step 8
Submit by Mail or Canada House Drop-Box

London accepts passport applications by traceable/registered mail. The High Commission also provides a Consular Services drop-box inside the Cockspur Street entrance of Canada House, currently available Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm except public holidays.

Step 9
Send to the Correct London Address

Address mailed applications to High Commission of Canada, Attn: Consular - Passport Services, Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London, SW1Y 5BJ. Several applications can be enclosed in one envelope.

Step 10
Wait for Processing

The Government of Canada aims to process passport applications submitted outside Canada and the United States within 20 business days, plus mailing time. Do not treat this as a guaranteed total delivery date because mailing time is separate.

Step 11
Track the Delivery of Your Submission

The High Commission advises applicants to track the shipment with the courier or postal company they selected. Because of high application volume, London states that it will not answer routine enquiries about application status or receipt of documents.

Step 12
Receive the New Passport

For mailed London applications, the passport and original documents are returned by registered mail. Canada notes that the passport and original documentation may arrive in two separate packages.

Step 13
Check the New Passport

Check the spelling of your name, date of birth, place of birth, gender identifier, passport number and validity period as soon as the passport arrives. If there is an apparent production error, contact the issuing Canadian office promptly.

Step 14
Update Related Travel Records

If you have a NEXUS card, Canada advises updating your passport information in the Trusted Traveler Programs system. Also update any airline, visa, residence or travel-authorisation record where the old passport number is stored.

Your previous passport must have been an adult passport issued when you were at least 16, issued within the last 15 years, valid for 5 or 10 years, and have the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier that you want on the new passport. If any of those conditions are not met, use the general adult passport application instead.

No universal UK immigration-status document is listed as a requirement for ordinary Canadian passport renewal. The Canadian passport process is based primarily on Canadian citizenship, passport history and the applicable identity/application requirements. Individual cases can require additional documentation.

Yes. The High Commission of Canada in London accepts applications by registered or traceable mail and also provides a Consular Services drop-box inside Canada House at the Cockspur Street entrance. The current drop-box hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, excluding public holidays. London currently instructs applicants to pay online and include the printed payment receipt.

The Government of Canada currently aims to process applications submitted outside Canada and the United States within 20 business days, plus mailing time. That is the official service standard; it should not be converted into a fixed 4- or 6-week promise because mailing time is separate.

No. Canadian child passports cannot be renewed. A new child passport application is required each time the child passport expires until the child reaches age 16. The child application uses PPTC 042 and has different guarantor and parental/custody requirements from adult simplified renewal.
UKVI eVisa & Status Check

A UKVI share code is currently valid for 90 days. Keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account and ensure your eVisa is linked to your new passport before international travel.

UK Status & Consular Requirements:
  • A UK visa, biometric residence permit, ILR or EUSS share code is not a universal Canadian passport-renewal requirement.
  • The applicant must qualify as a Canadian citizen eligible for the relevant passport service.
  • Canadian passport renewal is based on the applicant's Canadian passport history and identity information rather than UK immigration status.
