Social Insurance Number (SIN) Guide
Check your SIN structure validity, learn how to apply at Service Canada, and understand temporary 9-series rules.
SIN Checksum Validator
CRA and Service Canada SINs conform to a Luhn algorithm checksum. Check your format structure below:
Formatting spaces or hyphens are ignored during check.
Guarding Your SIN
- Never share via Email/SMS: Legitimate employers and banks will never request your SIN over unsecured text channels.
- Who can legally ask for it: Employers (after hiring you), financial institutions (to report interest income to the CRA), and government agencies.
- Who cannot force you: Landlords, cell phone providers, utilities, and gyms. You can refuse to provide it for identity verification.
Service Canada Application Guide
Service Canada handles SIN issuance. You can apply in person at any Service Canada Centre to receive your paper confirmation letter immediately, or submit an application online.
Required Documents checklist:
- 📄 Primary Document: Valid work permit issued by IRCC under the IRPA.
- 📄 Secondary Document: Valid passport or official national photo ID.
- 📄 Proof of Address: Bank statement, utility bill, or residential lease showing your name and Canadian address (required for online/mail applications).
Key Temporary Resident Rules:
| SIN Expiry | Temporary SINs (starting with 9) expire on the date printed on your IRCC permit document. You must renew your SIN once you receive a status extension. |
| Transition to PR | Once you obtain Permanent Residence, your starts-with-9 SIN becomes invalid. You must apply for a new permanent SIN and transfer your tax history at your bank and employer. |
| Processing Fees | Applying for or renewing a Social Insurance Number is **100% Free** at Service Canada. Beware of third-party scam sites charging fees for filing assistance. |
