PGWP Eligible Fields of Study List
The official 5 labor-shortage fields and qualifying CIP code regulations for college graduates in 2026.
These field of study restrictions **do not apply** to students graduating from university programs (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degrees). University graduates are exempt and can get a PGWP regardless of their major. These rules apply strictly to **college graduates** (diploma or certificate programs).
The 5 Eligible Fields of Study
If you graduate from a college program, your field of study must fall into one of these 5 categories to qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit:
- Agriculture and Agri-Food: Focusing on sustainable food production, agronomy, and animal care.
- Healthcare: Including nursing, medical administration, pharmacy assistance, and senior care services.
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM): Computer programming, web development, engineering technology, and data analytics.
- Skilled Trades: Electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and industrial mechanics.
- Transportation: Logistics, heavy truck operation, aviation maintenance, and supply chain management.
Understanding CIP Codes
IRCC uses the **Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP)** taxonomy to determine if your specific college course qualifies:
- What is a CIP Code? Every program of study at a Canadian DLI is assigned a 4- or 6-digit CIP code.
- Find Your Program Code: You must request the official CIP code of your program from your college registrar's office.
- Cross-Reference: Compare your program's CIP code against the official IRCC list of 1,107 eligible CIP codes. If your program code is not on the list, you will be **refused** a PGWP upon graduation.
Additional PGWP Requirements for College Grads
Even if your CIP code is eligible, you must satisfy the language criteria:
- Language Level: College graduates must prove English or French proficiency at **CLB 5** or higher.
- Accepted Tests: Only IELTS General, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core are accepted. You cannot submit an IELTS Academic test.
