What is License Reciprocity?
Canada has signed bilateral **license exchange agreements** with select foreign jurisdictions. If your country is on this list and you have at least **2 years of driving experience**, you can swap your license for a Canadian Class 5 (or G) license without taking a written knowledge test or road test:
- Reciprocal Countries: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Austria, and Taiwan.
- Ontario G License Swap: Swap your license at any DriveTest center. If you have 2+ years of experience, you get a full G license immediately. Less than 2 years gets you a G2 license.
- B.C. Class 5 Swap: Swap your license at any ICBC licensing branch within **90 days** of moving.
Required Documentation for the Exchange
When visiting the provincial licensing office, you must present the following documents:
- Original Foreign License: Must be active and show an expiration date. Provincial centers will confiscate your foreign license upon exchange.
- Certified Translation: If your license is not in English or French, you must provide a translation from a certified MTO/ICBC approved translator.
- Driving Record (Abstract): A certified letter or abstract from your home country's licensing agency proving your history and date of first issuance (highly recommended if your license does not print the original issue date).
- Proof of Legal Status: Valid passport and Canadian visa/permit (e.g. Work permit, Study permit, or PR card).
Process for Non-Reciprocal Countries
If your home country does not hold a reciprocity agreement (e.g. India, Brazil, UAE, China):
- Written Test: You must take and pass the local written knowledge test (G1 in Ontario, L in BC).
- Declare Experience: Submit an official Driving Record/Abstract. This allows the center to waive the standard 12-month waiting period between test levels.
- Road Test booking: You can book your road test (G2/G in Ontario, Class 7/5 in BC) immediately, bypassing waiting times.
