Canada Passport Renewal Guidelines
Simplified renewal eligibility, guarantor requirements, photo guidelines, and processing times.
Legal & Regulatory Definition
"You can use the simplified renewal application process if your previous passport was issued within 15 years of the date you apply."
Expat Compliance Analysis
To qualify for simplified renewal, you must have been at least 16 years old when your previous passport was issued, and it must not be damaged or reported lost/stolen. For standard applications, you must designate a Guarantor (a Canadian citizen aged 18+ who has known you for 2+ years and holds a valid Canadian passport). If applying outside Canada without a guarantor, you must use the statutory declaration in lieu of guarantor (Form PPTC 132) and name two professional Referees.
Actionable Requirements & Steps
Guarantor vs Referees
A guarantor signs your application, photos, and copies of supporting documents. Referees do not sign photos but may be contacted by passport officers to verify your identity.
Processing Timelines
In-person at a specialized passport office: 10 business days. In-person at a Service Canada Centre: 20 business days. By mail: 20 business days (excludes shipping times).
Immigration Warning
Your passport must generally be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date to enter most international destinations. Airlines will deny boarding if validity limits are not respected.
