🇬🇧 British Citizen Birth Registration & Passport
If a child is born in the U.S. to at least one British parent who was born in the UK (British citizen otherwise than by descent), the child is automatically a British citizen from birth.
Step-by-Step Registration Steps:
- Obtain the U.S. Birth Certificate (certified copy with state seal).
- Apply online on GOV.UK for the child's first British passport.
- Submit supporting documents (original UK parent birth certificate, parent U.S. status proofs, and child's U.S. birth certificate) via international mail to HM Passport Office.
- Receive the new UK passport and returned original documents separately via secure international courier.
Important Warning: Do not mail photocopy documents to HMPO. Only original documents or official government-issued replacement copies are accepted.
U.S. Birth Certificate
First Priority: Before applying for foreign citizenship or passports, you must secure the child's U.S. birth certificate from the county health department/registrar, and apply for their U.S. Passport and Social Security Number (SSN).
