Special Rules for IT Professionals
Germany allows qualifying IT specialists to obtain an EU Blue Card even without a formal university degree. The applicant must have at least three years of relevant IT professional experience gained within the previous seven years, at a level comparable to higher education, and the German job must require that experience. The 2026 salary threshold is €45,934.20.
British Citizens: Entry and Application
British citizens are third-country nationals for German immigration purposes. Germany allows British nationals to apply for the required residence title after arrival, unlike many other third-country nationals who generally must obtain a visa before entering to take up employment. The responsible German foreigners authority and Federal Foreign Office guidance should be checked before travel because the procedure depends on the individual's circumstances.
The Blue Card application can also be started online through the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal. The final residence title is issued by the competent German authority.
Permanent Residence
Blue Card holders can generally qualify for a German settlement permit after 27 months of qualifying employment and pension contributions with A1 German. With B1 German, the qualifying period can fall to 21 months. Other requirements, including basic knowledge of Germany and adequate housing, also apply.
Family and EU Mobility
EU Blue Card holders can generally reunite with eligible family members in Germany. Blue Card mobility within the EU also exists, but it has separate conditions. In particular, a Blue Card holder who has held an EU Blue Card in another EU Member State for at least 12 months can use the long-term mobility rules to move to Germany under the relevant conditions.
